Sprague brothers battery puts a charge into Springfield

-

The Sprague brothers formed a formidable battery in Springfield’s 3-0 win over Wayne in Thursday’s Main Line Senior Legion play.

Luke carried a no-hitter into the seventh inning and struck out six, all with little brother Cole behind the plate. A double broke up the bid for the no-no.

Mike Conran drove in Wayne Kelly for the winning run in the second inning. It was the only support the Spragues needed. Springfield, which also got two hits from Ed Ronayne, improved to 4-9-1.

Elsewhere in Main Line Senior Legion: BROOMALL-NEWTOWN15,ASTON-MEDIA0» There was plenty of offense to go around for Broomall-Newtown as four different players went 3 for 4. Luke Zimmerman led that contingent with three doubles, while Corey Woodcock scored a run and knocked in another, and the Mathes brothers, Alden and Cameron, combined for four runs. Scott Hahn, who took the win, combined with Steve Morrison to silence the Aston-Media bats.

Two bombs, timely hitting and a bad case of poison ivy defined Concord’s 6-5 win over Aston Valley.

Behind the plate, catcher John Convery, now known as “Poison Ivy” Convery, played with bad rashes on his face and arms; his eyes nearly swollen shut. It didn’t stop him from going 2 for 2 with an RBI and a run scored. He was outdone at the dish, however, by teammates Nate Sides and Frank Saviski. Each had a home run, with Saviski’s coming in the bottom of the sixth inning. That proved to be the winning runs. Saviski pitched the final inning plus for the win, relieving starter Ben Faso. MIDDLETOWN 7, MARPLE NEWTOWN 7 » With daylight dying — and Marple Newtown’s chances with it — Bobby Harper delivered a three-run home run to ensure both teams would go home with a point. Harper’s effort negated strong performances at the dish from Middletown’s Ricky Collings and Dave Dragone, both of whom collected two hits.

Paul Shepherd and Jared Morris combined on a three-hitter, striking out 11 in the process as Briarcliffe improved to 11-2 on the season with an 8-0 triumph over Folcroft.

Seamus McCaffery led the offense with three hits, two runs and two RBIs. Collin DiGalbo chipped in two runs and two RBI’s. GARNET VALLEY 8, MARPLE II 0 » A two-run single from Gautum Goswany stood out in Garnet Valley’s whitewashing of Marple II. That run-scoring hit was more than enough support for starter Steve James, who struck out nine opponents in the win. MARPLE TIGERS 7, BROOKHAVEN 1» Steady pitching from Chris Goggin and Kevin Sessa kept the Brookhaven bats at bay. The duo combined for seven strikeouts with Goggin starting and getting the win. Drew McWilliams and Mike McDevitt provided the pop for Marple. Each had two hits, with McWilliams driving in two runs and McDevitt scoring twice.

Delmont Prep Legion

Christian Reed went 3 for 3 and knocked in two runs to lead AstonMedia Blue past Aston-Media Orange, 5-4. Despite yielding four unearned runs, Ben Stanton and Jon Aman gave up just three hits combined in the win. Kieran Dougherty went 2 for 2 with one RBI.

District 1 Babe Ruth

Danny Sullivan tied the game with a bases-loaded triple in the fifth inning and picked up the win in relief, as Paul Morgan raced home on a passed ball in the bottom of the seventh to complete the 5-4 comefrom-behind victory over BroomallNewtown.
