NEWTOWN » Bubu is back.

After spending eight nights in the wilds of western Delaware County, the Sphynx cat who escaped from his Nicole Drive home June 21 has returned to his plush surroundings. He was discovered Friday afternoon in a nearby development.

“I got a call from Stephen Fuessinger, a friend of my son’s best friend, who found Bubu in his family’s garage,” said Nancy Kane. “We had offered a $1,000 reward, but he told me he didn’t want the money and was just glad he saw him.”

The 5-year-old, 11-pound feline apparently escaped from his own garage as Kane’s son, Zeke, was leaving for lacrosse practice. Blue-eyed Bubu, whose nearly-hairless body is covered with a bit of peach fuzz, tends to be somewhat “clingy,” said Kane. When he wasn’t at her feet, she soon realized he was on the move.

“He is an indoor cat and the few times he’s gotten out we’ve captured him within a couple minutes,” she added. “This time, no one saw him leave and the garage door must have closed behind him.”

Kane posted Bubu’s picture, wearing his navy blue and gold striped collar with the “I eat hamsters” tag, contact name and phone number on numerous Facebook lost and found pages and was emailed by several Delaware and Chester county rescue groups. She credited their “selfless volunteers,” especially local residents Cathy HermanHarsch and Lauren McCullough, who devoted countless hours walking with her physically through the local woods and mentally through the emotional ordeal.

“Anyone who is an animal person knows you can’t think logically when they are missing,” said Kane. “They were so dedicated and did all the logical thinking for me.”

She was equally amazed by Fuessinger’s decision not to accept the money.

“His mom should be really proud of that,” she said. “I need to figure out a way to thank him.”

Bubu’s Rumspringa left him “super dirty and full of ticks,” said Kane, and his first caged trip outside the house was to the vet. Although he lost 2 pounds and slightly scratched his eye, the doctor proclaimed him to be in good shape.

With Bubu back in the fold, Kane will join Zeke and her husband, Paul, in Denver for the World Series of Youth Lacrosse. Their son’s team is among the 12 U13 squads

throughout the nation that qualified for the three-day tournament.

“I just couldn’t go when Bubu was lost,” said Kane. “Now that he is home, I’ll be on a plane tomorrow.”
