100 Years Ago – 1917:

A large force of men is engaged in fitting up the former Duplex Metals Co.’s plant at the foot of Lloyd Street, which was purchased some months ago by the Chester Shipbuildi­ng Co. Structural steel is arriving at the yard and the buildings are being improved and equipped for their share in the work of the ever increasing industry. The Commercial Box and Envelope Co. place between the original shipyard and the Duplex plant will shortly be treated to extensive improvemen­ts. 75 Years Ago – 1942: Three “Minute Men” flags were presented to local industrial plants by Gloria Stuart and Barry Wood in conjunctio­n with the opening of the July drive for the sale of War Bonds and Stamps. The banners, which signify that more than 90 percent of the employees have signed pledges to buy bonds and stamps, were awarded to the Ford Motor Co., the Pure Oil Co., and the A.H. Wirz Co. The two theatrical celebritie­s spoke to groups of workers, urging every one of them to pledge no less than 10 percent of their salaries for bonds and stamps. 50 Years Ago – 1967:

A Morton man who learned Friday the Soviet Union has backed down on its promise to reunite him with his wife and daughter expressed fear today for the well-being of his family in Russia. “They will say my wife and daughter are not Communists and Soviets in spirit and treat them accordingl­y,” said Anatol Michelson, 48. Michelson, who defected from the Soviet Union over a decade ago with the hopes of having his family follow, said he does not know why the Russians broke their promise. “I can’t explain,” he said. “They simply said ‘nyet’ (no) and that’s all.”

25 Years Ago – 1992: Authoritie­s have confiscate­d over a dozen counterfei­t $20 bills, Chester police said. The bogus bills are being turned over to the Secret Service, which handles counterfei­t probes for the U.S. Department of the Treasury, according to city Detective Sgt. Gordon Shoates.

10 Years Ago – 2007:

One man is hospitaliz­ed in critical condition and other behind bars after an early morning dispute over a woman. Upper Chichester police at about 1:50 a.m. Friday for a report of a fight and stabbing. The defendant allegedly said that when he arrived home after a night of drinking, he saw his recent ex-girlfriend in front of the apartment complex talking with another man.
