100 Years Ago – 1917:
Preliminary plans were laid by members of Chester City Council for the opening of two important thoroughfares in the residential section of the city. Twentyfirst Street between Providence Avenue and Potter Street is to be opened, and Crosby Street from Second to Third streets is to be opened and graded.
75 Years Ago – 1942:
John J. McClure, Republican boss of Chester and Delaware County, asked the government to return $76,998 in taxes which he paid on liquor he was accused of smuggling into the country during Prohibition. The political leader said he paid the sum under protest in November 1938 when the government billed him for unpaid taxes on the liquor. The claimed he never smuggled any liquor into the country, that “he is a loyal and law-abiding citizen” and that the five-year statute of limitations had expired when the government filed its claim.
50 Years Ago – 1967:
Rev. Charles F. Montgomery, former pastor of the Linwood Heights Methodist Church, Lower Chichester, was to officiate today at the funeral of actress Jayne Mansfield in Pen Argyl, Northampton County. Mr. Montgomery was pastor of the Linwood church from June 1958 to June 1965, when he became pastor of the Zion Methodist Church, Pen Argyl. Born in Bryn Mawr, Miss Mansfield moved to Pen Argyl when she was 2 years old.
25 Years Ago – 1992:
They’ve dug a monstrous hole where JFK Stadium used to be and where Spectrum II will be. A Toronto lawyer officially dropped a stone foundation into it. Eric Lindros is now a hot Broad Street property. The agonizingly anticipated decision by independent arbitrator Larry Bertuzzi made public via a conference call from Toronto and across North America, fell in favor of the Flyers. Despite the claims of Nordiques owner Marcel Aubut and the Rangers’ front-office honchos, Bertuzzi received volumes of testimony and stunned the hockey world by seeing things Jay Snider’s righteous way.
10 Years Ago – 2007:
Ridley Township’s municipal marina at the foot of South Swarthmore Avenue is expected to be up and running by the Fourth of July after a series of setbacks during construction of new docks and boat ramps. The pilings at the docks were topped off with white caps and the fishing piers for kids and adults is finished.
