Multi-vehicle crash creates I-95 traffic nightmare
CHESTER » A multi-vehicle accident on Interstate 95 northbound sent one individual to the hospital Friday after rear-ending a box truck near the merge with Interstate 476.
A white parcel van with New Jersey plates was heading northbound on I-95 near mile marker “6” when it collided with a white box truck, witnesses said. Around 12:37 p.m. on Friday the driver of the van was reported to be “heavily entrapped” within the vehicle causing a major, lunchtime slowdown both directions on the highway.
The gate on the back of the box truck sliced into the driver’s side of the parcel van, leaving a gaping hole that exposed the wheel well down to the axle. The hood was smashed well into the cabin of van, where the driver was trapped before the Chester Fire Department, Chester Township police and the Pennsylvania State Police responded
freed the unidentified driver.
Traffic was reduced to a single lane for well over an hour.
Towing a racing Volkswagen Scirocco — the second generation sport coupe that was manufactured between 1981 and 1992, complete with racing decals — was also damaged in the collision. Upon the force of the abrupt stop, the Scirocco slid forward and crushed a stainless steel toolbox on the trailer.
The additional weight behind the parcel van made the driver’s ability to stop behind the box truck in the merging area off Chestnut Street in Chester and the I-476 interchange impossible.
Responders labored over separating the trailer from the parcel van in order for the two sections to be towed.
The driver was taken to Crozer-Chester Medical Center with unknown injuries.
