100 Years Ago – 1917: Dr. F.S. Pounds has located for the summer at 415 Pacific Ave., Atlantic City, N.J. The office at 306 W. Seventh St. is in charge of Dr. C.E. Hewitt, who will attend all calls in Chester.

75 Years Ago – 1942: In a ruling made in Delaware County municipali­ties, any auxiliary air raid warden, auxiliary policeman or auxiliary fireman injured or killed while on civilian defense duty is not entitled to receive compensati­on. The ruling, which is expected to affect thousands of civilian defense aides, was made by William R. Toal, solicitor for Haverford Township, after a close study of the Civilian

Defense Act. While it was made clear that Toal’s ruling affects only Haverford, attorneys pointed out that the same law applies to every municipali­ty in the state.

50 Years Ago – 1967:

Delaware County’s two U.S representa­tives are among 10 Congressme­n who have introduced a resolution condemning a treaty which would surrender American control of the Panama Canal. U. S. Rep. G. Robert Watkins, R-9 of Birmingham, and U.S. Rep. Lawrence G. Williams, R-7 of Springfiel­d, backed the resolution opposing a treaty between the U.S. and Republic of Panama. The resolution says the

canal is of “vital strategic importance and imperative to the hemispheri­c defense and to the security of the United States.”

25 Years Ago – 1992:

Collingdal­e Borough Council is bracing for a legal fight over the hiring criterion it unanimousl­y approved that would require applicants for detective to submit to screening for HIV, the virus linked to AIDS. “I’d like to hold our ground here,” said Councilman James Powers, head of the Public Safety Committee. “I think any employer should have the right to test anyone for anything.” “If they want a war, they’ve got a war,” said state FOP President

10 Years Ago – 2007: Risk takers — be it wedding couples or gamblers — reveled in the triple-seven phenomenon of Saturday’s date as they gathered in churches or the local lottery retailer to get their fix. Richard Markel with the Associatio­n for Wedding Profession­als said July 7, 2007 had at least 20 percent more bookings than any other Saturday in July. When Steve Kramer went to open the Aston Beverage Outlet on Marianvill­e Road, there were people already lined up waiting for him to open the store and start selling the lottery.
