Broomall-Newtown, Kane raise District 1 crown

Broomall-Newtown’s boys of summer are back to their winning ways.

The 15-year-old Babe Ruth team captured the District 1 title Friday with a 3-1 victory over 21st Ward.

Thomas Kane pitched six spectacula­r innings with seven strikeouts while allowing only three hits. Owen Noonan closed the door for the save.

Ben Kovacs was the standout at the plate for B-N. He tied the game in the fourth with an RBI single, then gave B-N a 2-1 lead in the sixth with a sacrifice fly. Kane smacked a two-out RBI double in the sixth to extend the lead to 3-1.

Broomall-Newtown advances to the Babe Ruth state tournament next week in Mifflin County. Its first game is slated for July 14 at 10 a.m.

Babe Ruth 14s

Thanks to the steady pitching of Nate Russell, UDHL forced a winner-take-all for the District 1 championsh­ip.

Russell hurled a complete game to lead UDHL past Broomall-Newtown, 3-1. Jake Amatucci, Matt Basler and Drew Stringer keyed the offense.

UDHL and B-N play for the title Saturday at 1 o’clock at Dermond Field in Upper Darby.

Senior EDCO

Briarcliff­e wrapped up the No. 1 seed in the playoffs with a 4-0 victory over Garnet Valley.

Paul Shepherd, Kevin George and Collin DiGalbo combined to throw a three-hit shutout. Ty Blueford collected two hits and an RBI while Kevin Parks added a double for Briarcliff­e, which plays Brookhaven in the first game of a best-of-three quarterfin­al series Monday night at 6.

Delco League

Julian Kurych and Kendall Carney homered in support of pitcher Pat Graham, who tossed a complete game with six strikeouts in Aston Valley’s 12-1 shellackin­g of Upper Darby.

Kurych and Max Carney each banged out three hits for Aston. MIDDLETOWN 7, SPRINGFIEL­D 5 » Tim Becker drove in the go-ahead run in the fifth inning and the Lions never looked back. Jim Quinn had a big night with three hits and three RBIs, while Matt Briner chipped in with three base knocks. Andrew Abrams went the distance and helped his cause with two hits.

Diving

Caleb Fay led the way as Tinicum swept four of the five age groups in a 31-9 victory over Primos-Secane in Delco Diving League action Friday.

Fay turned in a score of 148.80 to win the senior boys division. The other winners for Tinicum were Maura Kerr (Novice, 59.20), Gina Quintela (junior girls, 80.30) and Lexi Crossley (senior gils, 128.40).

Jarod Rafter was the lone winner for Primos-Secane. He was first in the junior boys (95.60). PROSPECT PARK 32, GLENOLDEN 12 » Rocco Colonna (senior boys, 122.15), Brae MeCouch (senior girls, 134.60) and Emma Nagle (junior girls, 74.90) were the winners for Prospect Park.

Mason Messini (novice, 69.15) and David Stunzi (junior boys, 85.00) took home first place for Glenolden. KARAKUNG 28, RIDLEY PARK 17 » It was the visitors night as Dean Carson (senior boys, 144.50), Allie Rosengarte­n (senior girls, 164.10), Will Shallow (junior boys, 95.00) and Meredith Shallow (novice, 63.05) swept four of the five classes for Karakung.

Trinite Conover won the junior girls (121.30) for host Ridley Park. RIDLEY TWP. 32, KNOWLTON 13 » Mason Beck (senior boys, 157.80), Megan Lynch (senior girls, 168.20), Shane Eckler (junior boys, 90.30) and Kayleigh Kennedy (junior girls, 80.95) were the winners for Ridley Township.
