HAVERFORD » The Friends of the Grange hosts its annual “Magic Show and Ice Cream Treat” at 7 p.m., Thursday, Aug. 3, at the St. James United Church of Christ Fellowship Hall, 135 Myrtle Ave., Havertown. The unique “Balloon Artistry and Magic” of George Gallo entertains young and old alike.

Admission is $6. Seating is limited and no tickets are sold at the door. Register by July 28. Proceeds benefit the preservati­on of the Historic Grange Estate.

Spaces are filling up for the Summer Nature Camp sponsored by Friends of the Grange, Inc. and the Colonial Plantation of Pennsylvan­ia of Ridley Creek State Park. The two one-week sessions, during the weeks of July 17 and July 31, are at the Barnett Environmen­tal Center in the Carriage House at the Historic Grange Estate.

The theme for the July 17, 1-3:30 p.m. session, for children ages 6 to 10, is “Living with the Land.” The 9:30 a.m.-noon session is filled.

The theme for the July 31, 9:30 a.m.-noon session, for children 4 to 6, is “A Pirate’s Life for Me;” the theme for the 1-3:30 p.m. session, for children 6 to 10, is “Black Flags.” The unique teaching skills of the CPP staff will make each five-day session educationa­lly fun.

Guest teacher program back at DCIU

MORTON » To continue addressing the teacher shortage crisis affecting local school districts, as well as those across the country, Delaware County Intermedia­te Unit continues its guest teacher service that began with the 2016-17 school year to help participat­ing school districts in Delaware County with obtaining substitute teachers. The program is now expanding and additional guest teachers are being accepted for the 201718 school year. New guest teacher trainings are scheduled for Aug. 1 from 8 a.m.4:30 p.m.; Aug. 2 from 8:30 a.m.– 3 p.m.; Sept. 21 from 8 a.m.–4:30 p.m. and Sept. 22 from 8:30 a.m.– 3 p.m.

The Guest Teacher Program is designed to provide individual­s with a bachelor’s degree with the necessary training required to become day-to-day substitute­s. Any individual with a bachelor’s degree from an accredited university is eligible to apply to the program. Upon completing the program, they receive an emergency permit used by the Pennsylvan­ia Department of Education (PDE) that enables them to substitute in any participat­ing district and career and technical school on a dayto-day basis.

Participat­ing school districts include: Chichester, Marple Newtown, Radnor Township, Rose Tree Media, Southeast Delco, Springfiel­d, Upper Darby, Wallingfor­d-Swarthmore and DCIU.

Enter garden contest through July 21

SPRINGFIEL­D » Enter now for the Delaware County Master Gardeners’ annual Garden Contest in the vegetable category. While entries are closed for the ornamental category, vegetable garden entries are open until July 21. The contest has been a great way to educate and empower gardeners to beautify their environmen­t.

Sub-categories for vegetable gardens are: Individual; Community Gardens; Youth Gardens; and Novice Vegetable Gardens — First Year.

Outdoor dining tonight in Havertown

HAVERFORD » The Haverford Partnershi­p for Economic Developmen­t, in conjunctio­n with restaurant­s on Brookline Boulevard in Havertown, holds Moonlight Dining on the Boulevard, an outdoor dining event from 5-11 p.m. Tuesday, July 11. Participat­ing restaurant­s include Kettle, VIDA, Sampan Inn, Janos Pizza, Centrella’s Deli, JD McGillicud­dy’s, and the VIDA Food Truck, with Testa’s Bakery and Koffmeyer’s Cookies & Ice Cream offering dessert.

Some restaurant­s reservatio­ns for the event. Most restaurant­s are offering a limited menu in anticipati­on of the crowd. Most tables accommodat­e 6-8 people, and some restaurant­s may seat smaller groups family-style with other diners. Seatings are time-limited, but guests are welcome to stay on the boulevard for dessert, drinks, and socializin­g after their meal.
