100 Years Ago – 1917:

Coming to the Grand – two days only – July 24-25 – the World’s Sweetheart, Mary Pickford, in her latest production “The Little American” in seven acts. Coming from a six week’s showing at the Strand Theatre, New York. Attend matinee performanc­es to avoid the evening crowds. Simmonds’ has moved to its new location, 712 Welsh Street and Edgmont Avenue, and is ready to supply you with the latest books, stationery and card, pictures and framing, Edison Diamond Disc phonograph­s and records, cameras, supplies, developing and printing.

75 Years Ago – 1942:

Like its predecesso­rs, Delaware County’s blackout last night was a huge success. So dark was the business section of Chester that fireflies on Edgmont Avenue seemed to illuminate the block. Promptly at 9:15 the alter signal sounded, and within a few seconds the central city lights melted into complete oblivion.

50 Years Ago – 1967:

A light voter turnout is expected in Tuesday’s special election for the vacant state representa­tive seat in the 167th District. The contest between Republican Helen Odorisio of Radnor and Democrat Shirley A. Thomas of Marple has roused little political interest. The Republican­s, with a 5-1 registrati­on edge, are expected to win without difficulty.

25 Years Ago – 1992:

County officials and labor leaders have brought new meaning to BYOB. Instead of an invitation to party, it’s an innovative program that will help out-of-work building trades craftsmen start their own business. The program, Build Your Own Business, was announced at the June 30 meeting of county council by Councilman Paul Mattus. Its goals are to provide instructio­n on the management skills required to run a successful business including an understand­ing of such business basics as marketing, advertisin­g, finance, legal and insurance.

10 Years Ago – 2007:

Ridley Park council recently accepted the resignatio­n of Councilman George Wolhafe and immediatel­y named Iraq war veteran Nicholas Miccarelli to take his place. In his letter of resignatio­n, Wolhafe cited personal and profession­al commitment­s as reasons for leaving council. Miccarelli, 25, also served with the Army in Kosovo. He is a graduate of Ridley High School and the University of Pennsylvan­ia. He is chief of staff for state Rep. Ron Raymond, R-162, of Ridley Park.
