2 men gunned down in street; child hit by stray bullet

In a little more than 24 hours, gunfire on city streets claimed two more lives and left an 11-year-old boy injured when he was struck by a stray bullet that entered his home, police said.

The two fatalities mark the city’s 19th and 20th homicides of 2017.

Sunday afternoon Chester police announced they had made an arrest in one of the fatal shootings.

The violence started Friday night when police responded to a report of gunfire.

Shaquan Cruz-Chappell, 28, was pronounced dead at the scene in the 2800 block of West Seventh Street by paramedics from Crozer Chester Medical Center, according to a press release prepared by Chester Police Capt. James Chubb. He had been hit by multiple gunshots.

Police said they were initially called to West Ninth Street and Highland Avenue just after 7 p.m. for a report of a person shot in the back. While en route, the scene was changed to West Seventh and Highland. Upon arrival they found a black male suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.

Then just before 3 p.m. Saturday city officers were dispatched to the area of Thomas and Terrill streets for a report of a shooting. On arrival into the area, they observed a large crowd gathered in the intersecti­on. Upon further investigat­ion, they discovered a black male later identified as Teshon Malloy, 23, in the street, suffering from multiple gun shot wounds, police said. Paramedics from Crozer Chester Medical Center pronounced the victim dead at the scene.

Sunday afternoon police announced the arrest of Miguel Moreno, 19 of the 1100 block of Thomas Street in Chester, in the fatal shooting of Teshon Malloy. Detectives Mike Jay (CID) and Benjamin Thomas (CPD) filed an arrest warrant and Moreno has been arraigned and remanded to Delaware County Prison to await a preliminar­y hearing. Moreno is charged with first- and third-degree murder and other charges.

A few hours after that second fatal shooting in the city Saturday, city officers were dispatched to a residence in the 3400 block of Township Line Road just before 10 p.m. for another report of a shooting.

Upon their arrival, they discovered an 11-year oldvictim who had been shot in the upper chest area by a stray bullet that entered the residence, police said in a press release. The juvenile was transporte­d to Crozer Chester Medical Center where he is listed in stable condition and pending other testing, he will be transporte­d to Children’s Hospital of Philadelph­ia. Due to the age of the victim, his name will not be released.

There are no suspects in custody at this time. Police continue to investigat­e. Motives for the shootings are not yet known.
