100 Years Ago – 1917:

“As soon as the Kaiser hears I’m coming, he’ll sue for peace,” exclaimed Joseph “Stoney” McLaughlin when he learned that he was among the very first called for the first draft. “Stoney,” who is well known in sporting circles, says he is proud to be one of the “flowers’ of the American nation.

75 Years Ago – 1942:

The new housing project in the westerns section of town will bear the name of a local hero, if plans of the Chester Housing Authority are followed out. At an authority it was unanimousl­y resolved to change the third housing project’s name from “Thurlow Acres” to the “Lieut. Col. Hugh F. McCaffery Estates.” This change, suggested by Arthur R. Gearthart, will honor the memory of one of Chester’s native sons who gave his life in the service of his country, one of the first in the current war. After earning a civil engineerin­g degree with honors at Pennsylvan­ia Military College, he received a degree in law from Notre Dame in 1925.

50 Years Ago – 1967:

State Sen. Clarence D. Bell, R-9 of Upland, said he is opposed to an extension of the 5 percent sales tax to food and clothing. Bell said he expressed the opposition last week during a Senate GOP caucus. “This is not a fair tax for families with growing kids,” he said. “A good part of their income goes to clothing.”

25 Years Ago – 1992: A federal grand jury in Philadelph­ia indicted two men on charges of attempting to sell nearly $30,000 of counterfei­t $20 bills to an undercover Secret Service agent in Chester. Authoritie­s said that a Chester man and Wilmington, Del., man were connected with a counterfei­ting ring that released thousands of dollars in bogus currency into the Chester area over the last several weeks. 10 Years Ago – 2007: County council is in negotiatio­ns with Drexel University regarding a study that will examine how health services are delivered to county residents. Council Chairman Andy Reilly said he and Delaware County Executive Director Marianne Grace have been in discussion­s with representa­tives from Drexel University’s School of Public Health. University officials are being asked to examine how health services are distribute­d in Delaware County, Reilly said. How Delaware County handles public health services needs has been a point of debate for decades. The idea of a county health department was voted down almost 40 years ago by county residents.
