Darby students cool off with firefighters
DARBY BOROUGH » Students at Walnut Street Elementary School summer program in Darby cooled down with a little help from local firefighters Wednesday morning.
Members from Darby Fire Co. No. 1 stopped by to give the students a little hosing down to alleviate some of the heat that was lingering. No doubt some kids were hot running around on the blacktop as they celebrate the end of another extended school year.
Colwyn Elementary teacher and extended school year coordinator Geana Morris reached out to Darby Fire Co. No. 1 to help give a more community-involving, learning and fun event to end the extended school year session. The volunteer firefighters engaged about 100 students in some key fire prevention techniques, stressing the urge to call 911 if their home is on fire and to get out of the house and stay out.
Firefighter Frank Lanni donned the heavy gear, including bunker pants, a heavy jacket and an oxygen tank, to show what he would look like if ever he had to put out a fire.
Children were enamored gear, clamoring to touch the and to give him high-fives.
Lanni then let some of the young learners have a go at holding a charged fire hose and let it spray a bit on the school blacktop. Then he really opened up the hose to let it shower over the students and the teachers and other staffers there to indulge. with Lanni’s fireproof suit
