Take steps now to human survival assure

- Chilton G. Goebel, Jr., Chadds Ford, member of Citizens’ Climate Lobby, Delaware County

To the Times: The CEO of a Seed Company wrote recently that the renowned theoretical physicist Stephen Hawking said we should colonize the moon and Mars as soon as possible. Hawking had set a deadline for humanity to save itself over the next 100 years by colonizing Mars and other planets. He has warned that if we don’t we may not survive climate change.

The CEO thinks that Hawking’s prediction sounds more rhetorical than theoretical and because of his fame the public will take his warning literally. The CEO wrote that as an international seedsman he thinks Hawking is wrong.

The CEO says: If we can land on the moon, we can engineer new foods in great abundance. Unlike Hawking, I can speak only about farmers. Global warming, air pollution and asteroid collisions elude me.

While stating that Hawking is wrong, The Seed Company CEO did not acknowledge documented effects of climate change including global warming, weather getting more extreme, major threat to agriculture, negative impact on farming, reduced crop yield, increased drought, wildfires and impact on infrastructure and transportation.

Hawking’s colonizing theory may work in the long term, but the Citizens’ Climate Lobby’s proposed Carbon Fee & Dividend legislation would mitigate the expected climate change impacts taking the first steps to humanity survival.
