100 Years Ago – 1917:

The St. Rose of Lima campaign to raise $50,000 to liquidate the mortgage of $20,000 against the church and to furnish funds to build a home for the Sister of Charity who teach in the parochial school entered its last day on Sunday. The fund was increased by Saturday’s collection­s of $2,123.25, bringing the grand total up to $33,298.20.

75 Years Ago – 1942:

Two young school girls were in the hands of Juvenile Court authoritie­s today following their arrest on suspicion of committing a series of recent robberies in Chester. The 15-year of Crosby Street and the 13-yearold of East Fourth Street have admitted to seven robberies in apartments. Their arrest results from informatio­n furnished by a Sixth Ward housewife and a small boy, who told police he had been bribed by the girls to “keep his mouth shut.”

50 Years Ago – 1967:

Chester police raided a West Third Street house early today, confiscate­d 11 cases of untaxed whiskey — valued at about $50 a case — and arrested the building’s owner. Detective William Hamilton said he saw a youth leave the house carrying a case. A 37-year-old from the 1100 block of West Seventh Street was charged with illegal possession of untaxed whiskey and the youth seen leaving the house escaped a foot chase, Hamilton said.

25 Years Ago – 1992:

Al Gore preached a message of political renewal against the backdrop of Robert Indiana’s “LOVE” sculpture and said Lynn Yeakel’s U.S. Senate campaign against incumbent Republican Arlen Specter was part of the needed change. “We want to put government back on the side of working families for a change,” Gore said. Gore draws frequent contrast between the youthfulne­ss of the Democratic ticket – he’s 44 and Clinton is 45 – and the 67-year-old George H.W. Bush.

10 Years Ago – 2007:

Mayhem erupted Friday after a Clifton Heights man was angered after being kicked out of a woman’s car at an Upper Darby gas station. He allegedly attacked persons on the lot and set fire to a car after dousing it with gasoline from the gas pump. “He could have blown up the entire block, said Police Superinten­dent Michael Chitwood. According to Chitwood, the man kicked out the rear door window of the police vehicle while being transporte­d back to the station for processing and attempted suicide in a holding cell.
