Police seek suspect in fatal Haverford shooting
Described as a black male, standing 6 feet tall, wearing a red or maroon hoodie, the assailant was last seen fleeing from the scene in the 2300 block of Haverford Road. HAVERFORD » Police continued their hunt Sunday for a suspect in a fatal shooting in the Ardmore section of the township.
Described as a black male, standing 6 feet tall, wearing a red or maroon hoodie, the assailant was last seen fleeing from the scene in the 2300 block of Haverford Road. The unidentified shooter allegedly hurled an expletive at a shop owner near the intersection of Haverford and Wynnewood roads before vanishing, Haverford Police Chief John Viola said.
John Le, 29, of Narberth, was apparently arriving at a friend’s house after playing a game of tennis before being shot “three to four” times on the patio leading into the apartment on Haverford Road about 6:10 p.m.
He apparently stopped at a pizza shop about a block from his friend’s house. As he left the shop, the man wanted for questioning is seen on surveillance video walking in front him.
Police believe it was a random encounter.
Police received multiple 911 calls following the sounds of gunshots and arrived to find the unresponsive male victim lying outside the entrance to the apartment.
Viola said the victim was being tended to by the friend he had gone to visit when police arrived.
However, the victim never made it inside the premises.
Police administered CPR before medics transported the victim to an area hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Following the shooting, police said the suspect fled westbound on Haverford Road before cutting back between the apartment buildings to a rear alley that runs parallel to the main street. There he continued west to the intersection at Wynnewood Road, where he allegedly engaged in a verbal altercation with a store owner, and then, Viola said, “he disappears.”
Saturday night police released images of the suspect gained from surveillance cameras from businesses in the area.
“We have some video of him from a local business around Wynnewood and Haverford, so we do have a description of the shooter,” he said.
When asked when the last homicide occurred in Haverford, Viola said it might stretch back to 2005 when a woman was fatally stabbed by her estranged husband on Aug. 17, 2005, at the nowclosed Verlo mattress factory.
“It is unusual,” Viola said.
