100 Years Ago – 1917: Suffering with the intense heat and acting in a crazed manner, a West Second Street man attacked his brother yesterday afternoon in the midst of a quarrel and toppled him over with a spade. The impact of the blow was so terrific that his head was cut in several different places. Friends of the two men seeing the attack notified the police and the victim was sent to the Chester Hospital while the attacker was sent to the police station.

75 Years Ago – 1942: The staff of the Chester Reporter, members of the American Newspaper Guild, became the first unit to sign up voluntaril­y for one hour’s pay per month under the war activities program of their union. The funds, which are being given from their strike benefits, will go to the National CIO Committee for American and Allied War Relief. The Reporter staff people are members of the Philadelph­ia-Camden Newspaper Guild, and have been on strike against the Chester Times since before Pearl Harbor.

50 Years Ago – 1967:

Chester Mayor James H. Gorbey said today he favors a proposal to assign deputy attorney generals to police department­s in cities where arrests might touch off racial turmoil. Gorbey said the suggestion was outlined briefly in Harrisburg at a mayor’s conference called by Gov. Raymond P. Shafer. “The purpose would be to protect individual­s who are arrested and police officers from unjustifie­d claims of police brutality,” Gorbey said.

25 Years Ago – 1992: Upper Darby Township Zoning Hearing Board will decide at its August meeting whether a 10,000-squarefoot amusement arcade proposed for 69th Street is “family entertainm­ent,” as claimed by its developer, or a use that will foster “an out-of-control environmen­t” as alleged by its critics. According to the applicatio­n from Morris Willner’s Monarch Inc., the center would, along with an arcade, house retail space, a nine-screen Cineplex and a 12,000-square-foot food court.

10 Years Ago – 2007:

Chester Township police are asking the public’s help in identifyin­g the woman who racked up more than $900 in charges on an elderly victim’s bank card between July 23 and 24. The stolen card was used at a Trainer beauty supply shop, a Chester gas station, and five stores in Brookhaven. She was seen in Brookhaven in an older model white General Motors car.
