100 Years Ago – 1917:

Victory has at last attended the efforts of the forces which have been fighting tirelessly for weeks to save the life of Edna Bauske, 22, of Philadelph­ia, who was terribly burned in the explosion at the plant of the Eddystone Munitions Co. on April 10. Literally snatched from the jaws of death, Edna will be discharged in a few days from the Chester Hospital. She is the only remaining victim of the explosion in the hospital. Much credit is given to a woman physician – Dr. Marika Lambichi – for saving Edna’s life. Dr. Lambichi, an intern at the hospital, took an interest in the case when the charged, moaning body of Edna was brought to the hospital.

75 Years Ago – 1942:

A defense worker of 101 Kerlin St., Chester, was so tired after finishing a double shift at a riverfront defense plant Sunday afternoon that he couldn’t make it home. He simply went into the yard at the rear of a West Third Street house, divested himself of all clothing, stretched himself out on the grass and was soon sound asleep. Arraigned in police court, the man said, “I was tired, Your Honor. I had just finished working a double shift.” To which Magistrate Lowry replied, “I’m working a triple shift each day. Pay a $25 fine or serve 90 days at Broadmeado­ws.”

50 Years Ago – 1967:

Severe thundersto­rms lashed Delaware County, causing power blackouts, lightning damage, numerous automobile accidents and minor flooding. The lightning caused at least two house fires in Aston and reportedly struck buildings and trees in other communitie­s throughout the county.

25 Years Ago – 1992:

Federal prosecutor­s charged a former Havertown man with using phony financial statements and lying about his ownership of luxury items to bilk banks in four states out of hundreds of thousands of dollars in loan. A former loan officer was also charged with issuing a $75,000 loan to the man based on his fraudulent claim that he was the president of a “shell corporatio­n” that actually had no assets or revenue.

10 Years Ago – 2007:

Saturday was a day for celebratin­g the rich history of Darby Borough as the Darby Historical Society hosted a 325th Anniversar­y event. “There’s just so much history for Darby,” Lindy Wardell of the Darby Historical Society said. She said Samuel and John Adams visited friends here and Samuel Adams actually witnessed someone’s will from Darby.
