Learn local Underground Railroad history
WILMINGTON » The Underground Railroad Coalition takes participants on a virtual tour of sites in Chester and Delaware counties that played a critical role in resisting American Slavery in the 19th century for its summer public program from 6:30-8 p.m. Aug. 28 at the Delaware History Museum, 504 N. Market St.
The free program highlights a proposed heritage trail called “People of Conscience, People of Faith.” The URCD is committed to working within Delaware and across state lines to tell the authentic story of the Underground Railroad. The organization’s proudest collaboration to date is participation in the two-state (and counting) Harriet Tubman Underground Railroad Byway.
Once freedom seekers left Delaware, they often placed their lives in the capable hands of Chester and Delaware County abolitionists and Underground Railroad activists. Seeking to extend the public story highlighted by the Harriet Tubman Underground Railroad Byway in Maryland and Delaware, resident historians and descendants of Underground Railroad activists in Pennsylvania have some specific ideas for getting the message into the community. Karen Marshall, Heritage Preservation Coordinator of the Chester County Planning Commission highlights the efforts of a volunteer group to establish the “People of Conscience, People of Faith” trail to tell of important historic sites and people in the fight to end American slavery, from Longwood Meeting in Kennett Square, where more daring Friends gathered and where freedom seekers rested, to Eden Cemetery in Upper Darby, final resting place of the famous William Still, clerk of the Vigilance Committee in Philadelphia, and points in between.
Following the program will be a toast to Thomas Garrett, Delaware’s most famous Underground Railroad Stationmaster, on the 228th anniversary of his birth, Aug. 21, 1789. The event is free and open to the public.
