100 Years Ago – 1917: Delaware County’s soldiers and sailors are not likely to be given an opportunit­y to participat­e in the primary election Sept. 19, and because of the shifting of commands from point to point many of them may also be deprived of a vote at the fail election, officials said today. As yet the national and state government­s have not taken up with the county commission­ers way and means of voting soldiers and sailors.

75 Years Ago – 1942: The Chester Times strike is virtually settled. Today the Newspaper Guild of Philadelph­ia and Camden and Alfred G. Hill, publisher who is leasing the Times from Charles R. Long, are expected to sign an agreement, with the Times probably reopening Aug. 4. The agreement will include union security in form of a modified Guild shop, a fiveday 40-hours week for the majority of the employees covered by the contract, wage increases running from 10 to 50 percent, job security, time and one-half for overtime, and other standard Guild clauses. The employees of the Chester Times have been on strike since Nov. 4, over a month before the war started.

50 Years Ago – 1967: A public meeting to improve police community relations in Chester’s poverty areas failed to materializ­e

Saturday night at the Robert Wade Neighborho­od House, 217 Concord Ave. The police were there but the community wasn’t. The meeting was called off when it became evident there was no significan­t response.

25 Years Ago – 1992: Chester Mayor Barbara Bohannan-Sheppard has refused to sign the monthly checks for the Chester Townwatch program since May, insisting that city council sit down and decide the future of the program before any additional money is spent. Townwatch, which has an annual budget of $7,500, has seen its membership plummet from about 80 when it was formed 13 years ago to fewer than 10 today, according to its president, Ben Boyce. The mayor and Police Chief James B. Clark believe the money would be spent more wisely if it were invested in the Townwatch program being created by the Police Department itself.

10 Years Ago – 2007: Aldan Council unanimousl­y adopted a resolution to assure that the borough’s newly completed Gateway Park will be preserved as open space and used only as a park. Restrictin­g the land against future developmen­t was one of the provisions of a state grant.
