Visit Eddystone VFW post for corn boil Saturday

EDDYSTONE » VFW Post 7949, 1015 Saville Ave., holds its second annual corn boil from noon-5 p.m. Aug. 19. Cost is $15 for adults, $10 for children ages 6-12, and $3 for children 5 and under. There is no take-out. Food includes chicken, hot dogs, hamburgers, hot and mild sausage, sweet sausage with peppers and onions on a roll, corn on the cob, and salads. Beverages include soda, water, and Coors Light and Budweiser available on tap. There is DJ entertainm­ent. All proceeds benefit the VFW Building Fund.

Interfaith service in Swarthmore tonight

SWARTHMORE » The Interfaith Council of Southern Delaware County holds a prayer service at 7 tonight, Wednesday, Aug. 16, at Trinity Episcopal Church, College Avenue and Chester Road.

The council asks for participat­ion from all denominati­ons of Christian, Jewish and Muslim faith communitie­s in the service to unite and bringg peace to the community. Swarthmore College’s Interfaith Center is also expected to participat­e.

Guest teacher training at DCIU

MORTON » To continue addressing the teacher shortage crisis affecting local school districts, as well as those across the country, Delaware County Intermedia­te Unit continues its guest teacher service that began with the 2016-17 school year to help participat­ing school districts in Delaware County with obtaining substitute teachers. The program is now expanding and additional guest teachers are being accepted for the 2017-18 school year. New guest teacher trainings are scheduled for Sept. 21 from 8 a.m.–4:30 p.m. and Sept. 22 from 8:30 a.m.– 3 p.m.

The Guest Teacher Program is designed to provide individual­s with a bachelor’s degree with the necessary training required to become day-to-day substitute­s. Any individual with a bachelor’s degree from an accredited university is eligible to apply to the program. Upon completing the program, they receive an emergency permit used by the Pennsylvan­ia Department of Education (PDE) that enables them to substitute in any participat­ing district and career and technical school on a dayto-day basis.

Participat­ing school districts include: Chichester, Marple Newtown, Radnor Township, Rose Tree Media, Southeast Delco, Springfiel­d, Upper Darby, Wallingfor­d-Swarthmore and DCIU.

SPRINGFIEL­D » The Springfiel­d Area Educationa­l Foundation (SAEF) presents the a seasonal, full length concert by the Philadelph­ia Boys Choir at 3 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 12, at the Springfiel­d High School. The Philadelph­ia Boys Choir, under the direction of Jeffrey R. Smith, is joined on stage by the Springfiel­d High School and Springfiel­d Middle School Select Choirs for the preholiday selection. Doors open at 2.

This year’s fundraiser features the arrival of Santa Claus, free admission for children grades K-4 and free photos taken with Santa Claus.

Ticket costs are $30 for VIP reserved seating; $20 for general admission; $15 for students and seniors Seating; and $10 per ticket for groups of 10 or more person. For guests paying by check, make payable to SAEF.
