Strath Haven birdies its way past Kennett

All five Strath Haven scorers carded birdies Thursday afternoon at Hartefeld National Golf Club. It turned out that the Panthers would need almost every last one of them.

Kevin Smith, who birdied the eighth hole on the Hartefeld back nine, brought home the low round of 38 as Haven edged Kennett, 208-210, in a nonleague battle.

Lauren Butscher (43) and Alex Lombard (44) also birdied the eighth hole. Ben Newlon’s birdie arrived on the third on the way to a 40, while David Merz birdied the sixth for his tally of 43 for Haven (2-1).

In the Central League: MARPLE NEWTOWN 222, PENNCREST 242 » Gillyoung Koh produced the low round of 42 to lead the Tigers. Mike May and Ben Sjolander chipped in 45s.

Max Elfenbein and Steve Fuessinger paced of 45.

In the Catholic League: O’HARA SPLITS TRI-MATCH » Michael Larkin posted the Lions’ low round of 39 at Philadelph­ia Country Club’s Centennial Course as O’Hara topped Lansdale Catholic, 271-299, but fell to St. Joseph’s Prep, 248-271.

Luke Savage added a seven-over 42 for O’Hara, while JP Ahearn chipped in a 45.

All four of Prep’s scorers were under 45, led by Drew Stern with a 37 and Will Keane at 38. Brandon Clark led Lansdale Catholic at 44.

Annamarie Degnan recovered after dropping the first set to score the decisive triumph in a 3-2 nonleague win for Upper Darby Thursday.

Degnan dropped the first Page at first singles before 4-6, 6-4, 6-2.

Kenzie Gardler and Mary Clare Hayden, and Lauren Logue and Kathryn Toal swept the doubles points for O’Hara in its season-opener.

Cameron Schultz survived a secondset tiebreaker to prevail in second singles for Upper Darby. Emily Gian’s triumph over Jessica Dougherty was even more dramatic: 5-7, 7-6 (7-4), 6-4 for the Royal.

In other nonleague action: SUN VALLEY 6, BONNER & PRENDERGAS­T 1» It was a long day on the court for the doubles matches, each of went the full three sets only for the Vanguards to prevail.

The second doubles tandem of Hailey Foracre and Jazmine La dropped the first set, 6-4, to Sophia Pringle and set to Braya recovering, Meghan Flemming before rebounding, 6-1 and 6-4. The pairings of Marissa Calvecchio and Kaitlin Lynch, and Paula Sky and Emma Ryan won tight third sets at third and fourth doubles, respective­ly.

Singles was a relative breeze, with Devin Cronin and Maddy Koons dropping just one game total in the first two singles flights.

John Nelligan paired five goals with three assists, and TJ Brooks added four goals and three helpers as Haverford School topped Landon School, 17-5.

Matt and Ryan LaRocca chipped in two goals each, the former added a pair of assists. Nick Biddle made eight saves and two blocks in net for the Fords.
