100 Years Ago – 1917:

A telegram to the Times dated at Cresco, Pa., this morning announced the death of Daniel W. Flenner, longtime printer of this city, for 35 years foreman of the Times mechanical department, and well known in secret society circles. The grim announcement from the Poconos section, where he was vacationing, caused not only surprise but genuine regret among his friends in this city, where he made his home for most of his life. It was here that his success in the Art Preservative was attained, where he found his helpmate in life and that he mingled socially and fraternally.

75 Years Ago – 1942:

Brigadier Gen. Benjamin Schofield Berry, a native of Chester, is dead at the age of 60. Gen. Berry died in Oakland, Calif., from pneumonia. He was decorated in the World War for bravery while commanding the Third Battalion of the Fifth Regiment Marine Corps. Gen. Berry was the son of the late William H. Berry, former mayor of Chester, State Treasurer and Collector of the Port at Philadelphia. General Berry spent his youth in Chester, attending the local schools and graduating from PMC. He then received training at Annapolis before being appointed as a lieutenant in the Marine Corps.

50 Years Ago – 1967:

There will be no half-day sessions in Chester public schools in September. “We’re going on regular sessions” when school opens next month, Schools Superintendent John J. Vaul said. “But they’ll be crowded classrooms with two teachers in each classroom,” he said. The discussion followed discussion on a “suggestion” from the Pennsylvania Department of Public Instruction to put up with overcrowding temporarily rather than put six elementary schools on split schedules.

25 Years Ago – 1992:

A district-wide smoke-free policy that was to be adopted by the Southeast Delco School Board this week has been tabled for another month to avoid possible legal wranglings. District solicitor Robert DiOrio told the board at Monday’s committee meeting that the district’s non-classified employees, represented by the Pennsylvania Federation of Teachers, has asked to bargain with the board concerning smoking restrictions in the new policy.

10 Years Ago – 2007:

A police complaint in Yeadon against a burglar who made off with more than $50,000 in commercial office property some five years ago was initially identified only by his DNA profile – based on evidence recovered from the crime scene. Two Newport cigarette butts recovered from the scene back in March 2002 netted two separate profiles and now one has come back with a match. An arrest warrant has been issued for a 22-year-old on charges in the March 25, 2002 burglary.
