DCCC celebrates golden anniversar­y with slate of September events

MARPLE » Delaware County Community College invites all to its 50th anniversar­y celebratio­n featuring a community day event, open to the public, followed by a homecoming for alumni and friends on Saturday, Sept. 23. Activities will be offered for people of all ages, including campus tours, games, refreshmen­ts, a time capsule burial, faculty demonstrat­ions and more. The event will be held rain or shine on the Marple Campus, 901 Media Line Road, Media.

To mark 50 years of providing educationa­l opportunit­ies to residents of Delaware and Chester counties, the college is hosting a two-part celebratio­n on Sept. 23, beginning with community day from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. Community day is free and include campus tours; a chance to meet the college’s new president, L. Joy Gates Black; food and refreshmen­ts, games, face painting and balloon animals; an appearance by the Phillie Phanatic between noon and 1 p.m.; and a 1:30 p.m. performanc­e by alumna Audra McLaughlin, Season 6 finalist on “The Voice.”

A variety of faculty demonstrat­ions and exhibits will also be offered, including free vision screenings, an interactiv­e display of World War I artifacts, mathematic­al magic tricks and more. Faculty artwork will be on view in the Art Gallery and staff will be on hand to answer questions about the college’s programs and services. The second part of the day consists of homecoming for alumni and friends. Homecoming kicks off the evening of Friday, Sept. 22, with an alumni basketball game at 6 p.m. at the Marple Newtown Recreation Center. On Saturday, former student-athletes will continue the friendly competitio­n with a soccer match at 11:30 a.m. and a baseball game at 2 p.m. on the fields at the Marple Campus. The Homecoming events continue at 2 p.m. with food and fun, including 50 years of music, an alumni awards ceremony and a time capsule burial hosted by President Gates Black. Alumni will have the chance to write a message to future graduates of the class of 2067, which will be included in the time capsule. Playing in the athletic games requires preregistr­ation and costs $25 (includes a T-shirt), all other activities are free. • The college’s Alpha Tau Epsilson chapter of Phi Theta Kappa hosts an all class years (past and present) PTK reunion as part of the college’s 50th anniversar­y celebratio­n at 2 p.m. Saturday. • The Office of Student Success and First Year Experience­s will host a reunion for past and current Delaware County Community College Student Success Ambassador­s as part the College’s 50th anniversar­y celebratio­n at 2 p.m. Saturday. • A Basketball Alumni Game and Gathering at 6 p.m. Friday at Marple Newtown Recreation Center, 20 Media Line Road, Newtown Square. Delaware County Community College basketball alumni are invited back for a game and gathering with a friendly scrimmage followed by a short networking reception at a local restaurant. • Soccer Alumni and Gathering at Game 11:30 a.m. Saturday at the Marple Campus Field. Current and former Phantoms soccer players are invited to this all class years reunion to compete in a “Delaware County Friendly” match.

• Baseball Alumni Game and Gathering at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Marple Campus Field. Join the Phantoms Baseball team to celebrate with a friendly game featuring players from past and present. Coach Paul Motta is the host for this day on the diamond, which includes a short networking reception following the game. Friends and families are welcome to attend.
