100 Years Ago – 1917: Patrolman William Padgett, of the city safety force, was shot and almost instantly killed shortly before two o’clock this morning, while in the performance of his duty at Eighth Street and Central Avenue. The alleged murderer has a gunshot wound in the groin, though the bullet was not fired by Officer Padgett. It is believed that during the scuffle the man’s own revolver inflicted the injury. This morning he was conscious and in good condition. It is suspected strongly by the police that he man is demented. Upon being arrest, he exclaimed “Do me no harm; the Lord is with me.”

75 Years Ago – 1942: Provisions of a city ordinance prohibiting noisy amusements are to be strictly enforced. This decision, reached by Mayor Clifford H. Peoples and Police Chief George J. Feeney, followed numerous complaints registered with the police by indignant residents living in proximity to taprooms in all sections of the city. Complainants claim patrons become boisterous and this condition, coupled with blaring music from radios, pianos, three-piece orchestras (generally cornet, piano and drums), tend to disrupt their rest in the early morning hours.

50 Years Ago – 1967:

Twenty-five persons, including 14from Delaware County, face hearings on charges stemming from a police raid on an alleged “pot party” at an apartment near the

Devon Horse Show Grounds in Tredyffrin, Chester County. The Saturday raid was led by Tredyffrin Police Chief Capt. Robert C. Gilroy. Police said the apartment on Chestnut Road near Lancaster Pike, had been under surveillance for three weeks.

25 Years Ago – 1992: While Delaware County Democrats are busy organizing a fall campaign effort for Bill Clinton, there’s little similar activity going on her on behalf of President George Bush. By this point in 1988, Delco Republican Chairman Tom Judge Sr., U.S. Rep. Curt Weldon and former District Justice Nick Sellers of Radnor were active in the campaign. Bush had even made a springtime campaign appearance at Springfield

GOP leader Charles Sexton’s home. “I think the people running Bush-Quayle are a bunch of Mickey Mouse amateurs. They don’t know what they’re doing. They certainly don’t understand politics,” Sexton said.

10 Years Ago – 2007: The discovery of a time capsule at the original Parkside Elementary School has the borough wondering what the contents will turn out to be. During the recent demolition of the old elementary school, Parkside Mayor Ardele Gordon wanted to make sure the cornerstone laid in 1919was preserved. Parkside officials have been told that the school district will soon announce a date for the opening of the capsule.
