John Edward McCormack, Jr.
It is with great and unexpected sorrow that we share the passing of John Edward Mc C ormack, Jr. John lost his short, yet heroic battle with cancer on Saturday, August 12, 2017 at the age of 77 in Thomas Jefferson University Hospital in Philadelphia, peacefully surrounded by his family.
John was a polio survivor as a child and was diagnosed with accelerated kidney disease before he luckily received a transplant from a young donor at Thomas Jefferson that gave him 12 good years. He endured two separate summers with melanoma and encountered lung, brain, and liver cancers just in the last year.
John was born on February 7, 1940 at the Women’s Hospital in Overbrook, Pa. and he grew up in Narberth, Pa. He was a longtime resident of Collingdale, Pa. and spent his professional life as a dedicated insurance agent. His career be- gan at General Accident, he became Vice-President of Preston Patterson, he then moved on to Kinder and Furman, and ended his work with Yoos Agency. After retiring, he spent his days in beloved Cape May, N.J.
John was completely devoted to his family and dearly loved as a husband, father, brother, uncle, and grandfather. John’s most adored hobby was following and idolizing Notre Dame. His fondest memories include trips to the campus and cheering inside the stadium.
John’s parents were John McCormack, Sr. and Lillian Kelly and he is survived by his wife, June McCormack and his children, John McCormack, III, Kevin McCormack and his wife, Christine Stacy-McCormack, Brian McCormack (deceased), Amielyn Spanier and her husband, Stephen Spanier, and Christopher McCormack and his wife, Denise McCormack.
John was the cherished “Poppy” of his grandchildren, Brittaney, Brendan, Ryan, Evan, Matthew, and Sean. His sisters include Mary Anne Barnes and her husband, George Barnes (deceased) and Sr. Katharine McCormack, IHM, (deceased).
His beautiful, kind hearted and selfless spirit has touched the lives of many. He did all that he could for those around him and he will be remembered by all as a true and humble giver, never anticipating anything in return. His bright and true spirit will forever shine down through the heavens.
A Memorial Mass will be celebrated on the 56th anniversary of their love, on Saturday, September 9th, at 10 A.M. at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, 500 Woodlawn Avenue, in Collingdale, Pa. 19023. There will be a visitation hour from 9 A.M. to 10 A.M. at the church.
In lieu of f lowers, our family has requested that all donations go back to Thomas Jefferson University Hospital with gratitude - specifically to the Sidney Kimmel Medical College, where John has been gifted to further research. John’s preference as a donor was always in hope that someday, his discoveries could be used to help another beautiful soul.
