Upper Darby hands Denney first coaching win

With his team slated to play again late Saturday afternoon, Bob Denney did not have much time to savor his first win as the boys soccer coach at Upper Darby.

He will, however, remember it for a long time.

Goalie Ransuon “Swan” Ravenelli came up with two huge saves in the penalty kick shootout as Upper Darby topped Oxford, 3-0, to advance to the championsh­ip game of the 25th annual Sun Valley Invitation­al.

The Royals take on host Sun Valley in the championsh­ip game at 5 p.m. Saturday.

After going scoreless in regulation and two overtimes, Darlensky Charles, Carlos Chouca and Jorge Bayberan found the net in the penalty kick shootout. In between, Ravenelli made his two saves to keep the Hornets off the board. SUN VALLEY 3, RIDLEY 2 » Evan Roland, Lucy Guiterrez and Gavin McGinnis scored as the Vanguards rallied from a 2-1 deficit. Goalie Jack Seegool made four saves. Joy Baysah had both goals for the Green Raiders.

In nonleague action: SPRINGFIEL­D 2, CARDINAL O’HARA 1 » Senior captain Justin Eckard converted a free kick from about 30 yards in the 64th minute to lift the Cougars over the Lions.

Freshman Mosif Atify got his varsity career off to a good start when he put home a cross from Anthony Lawson to give Springfiel­d a 1-0 lead. Charlie Sheehan put home a loose ball in front of the net in the 54th minute to tie the game for O’Hara.

Chris Walters was in goal for the first half for Springfiel­d and made five saves. Aidan Hoopes stopped nine shots in the second half. PENNCREST 4, INTERBORO 0» Max Brown collected a goal and assist to help the Lions open the season with a win on the road. Matt Arbogast, Alex Boudazin and Colby Schnyder also scored for Penncrest. Keiran Wilmot made three saves to post the shutout. STRATH HAVEN 1, RUSTIN 0 » Jon Kadoch put home a pass from Emmet Young in the first half and goalies Noah Atsaves (four saves) and Brett Burns (six saves) took care of Panthers. RADNOR 1, HATBORO-HORSHAM 1 » Jack Dooley’s unassisted goal in the first half was the only tally for the Raiders. Keeper Henry Cooke came up big with four saves in the doubleover­time draw. Lauren Cunningham had a hand in every goal as Episcopal Academy opened the season with a 4-0 victory over Radnor.

Cunningham finished with three assists and one goal. Maddie Loughead, Ali McHugh and Josie Konopka also scored for the Churchwome­n, while Hannah Moriarty and Allie Bush combined on the shutout. Schickling added another goal in the second half. Olivia Little and Lexi Chiarlone also scored for Springfiel­d. Erin Cutcliff added an assist and led a strong defensive effort. POTTSGROVE 2, RIDLEY 1 » Micah Schiavo had the goal for Ridley, while keeper Sydney Zimmerman made eight saves.
