World Orphan Choir brings its music to Chester

- By Loretta Rodgers Times Correspondent

CHESTER » To the delight of city residents, the Matsiko World Orphan Choir Sunday afternoon brought its unique style of music and dance to the MJ Freed Theater on the Avenue of the States.

Sponsored by the International Children’s Network, the choir was hosted in Chester by The Artist Warehouse Inc.

“The group flew in and they are traveling around the United States right now,” said Artist Warehouse founder Devon Walls. “At first they said they were booked, but asked to see our mission statement. I sent it right over and received a call telling me they would come here. This is so great for our kids here in Chester to have the opportunity to meet children from across the world.”

Approximately 25 children performed following a paint party, which was held in the building next door to the theater. The members of the choir were welcomed with open arms by Walls, the community, and especially from the children in Chester who were happy to paint and play games with them.

Once they sat down, Walls proceeded to ask the children from where they came. Their responses included Nepal, Peru, Liberia, and India.

The choir was organized by the ICN in 2008 and consisted of children from countries that are sponsored by the organization. The success of the first tour performance in the United States prompted subsequent visits.

The children, who all audition for the choir, share their culture through song and dance, and often relay personal life experiences to their audiences.

“This has been a big cultural exchange for the children,” Walls said. “A question and answer session was also held where the children were given the opportunity to learn about different cultures. Many of these kids come from humble beginnings and this choir is a story of triumph. For me, this is the equivalent of a rock star visiting the city of Chester.

Matsiko is a Ugandan word for “hope.” Through the choir, children are given hope for a brighter future.

All proceeds generated by the tour and merchandise sales go directly to support ICN’s worldwide programs, including educational sponsorship that provides orphaned children an opportunity to earn a college degree.

“The Matsiko children absolutely love to share the gift of life, love and hope that they’ve received through the support of sponsors — people just like you.” reads the group’s website.
