Widener’s delayed start an impressive one in rout

-

The offensive woes that plagued Widener in its season opening loss to Rowan continued into the first half of Saturday’s home opener against FDU-Florham. Then the Pride got their act in gear. Widener sandwiched three offensive touchdowns around two defensive scores to roll to a 49-7 triumph over FDU-Florham at Quick Stadium.

The Pride put 35 points on the board in the second half for their first win and first MAC victory of the season.

James Gillespie took a Sean McGaughey pass 76 yards for a touchdown on the third play from scrimmage in the third quarter to get things started for the Pride. Montrell Hicks-Taylor then went 49 yards for a TD and the rout was on.

Then the defense, specifically Jordan Powell, took over. The junior defensive back raced 18 yards with a fumble for a score and then returned an interception 100 yards for another TD, the third by the defense. Senior defensive back Kyle Lowery ran an interception back 96 yards in the second quarter to give the Pride a 14-0 lead.

McGaughey completed 8 of 14 passes for 174 yards. The Pride ran for 130 yards after rushing for minus yards last week against Rowan. CALIFORNIA (PA.) 54, CHEYNEY 14 » The fifthranked Vulcans scored on four of their first five possessions to quickly end any hopes the Wolves had of an upset.

California quarterback Michael Keir completed 16 of 23 passes for 221 yards and five touchdowns, two each to Luke Smorey and Tom Greene, to help the Vulcans build a 40-0 lead before the Wolves (1-1) reached pay dirt.

Dominick Trautz was 15-for-33 for 130 yards and one touchdown. Devin Miller pulled in a 32-yard TD pass from Trautz in the third quarter to get the Wolves on the board. Stan Wright Jr. and Justis Jacobs hooked up on a 12-yard TD pass with three seconds left in the game for Cheyney’s second score. WILLIAMSON 12, JERSEY COAST ACADEMY 10 » Defensive back Jack Gibson picked off three passes in his college debut, two in the final three minutes to preserve the victory for the Mechanics.

The freshman out of O’Hara appeared to seal the victory with his second interception with three minutes to go. However, a Williamson fumble gave Jersey Coast another shot and Gibson was there again to spoil the comeback bid. He notched his third pick with 1:24 left to tie the school record and seal the victory.

With Williamson trailing 10-0, quarterback Vince DelPercio scored on a six-yard run in the third quarter to get the Mechanics on the board. Receiver Darnell Wideman (Chester) pulled in a 36-yard TD pass from DelPercio to put Williamson ahead.
