100 Years Ago – 1917:

Fire, originatin­g in the boiler room, destroyed the lodge house on the Russell estate at Newtown Square last midnight. An alarm was telephoned to the Media Fire Co., which responded with the Newtown Fire Co., but could do little to save the property because of the rapid progress of the flames.

75 Years Ago – 1942:

Dr. J. Philip Van Keuren, chief of surgical staff of Crozer Hospital, died early today in Hahnemann Hospital, Philadelph­ia, following an illness of several months. His illness began with a carbuncle. Shortly after recovering from this illness, Dr. Van Keuren suffered a fall, and had been confined to the hospital since that time. Dr. Van Keuren was born in Middletown, N.Y., in 1882. He graduated from New York University and Hahnemann Medical College, Philadelph­ia. He was a resident of Chester for 37 years.

50 Years Ago – 1967:

A Ridley Township woman is the winner of the $5 first prize in this week’s Daily Times News Tip Contest. Mrs. John Saracina, 1212 Mildred Ave., won the prize for her tip on the death of an Upland woman following a shooting incident. The $3 second prize was won by Joseph DiGroves, 115 Fairview Road, Ridley Township, for his tip on a Swarthmore auto accident which killed a Chester boy and his aunt during the Labor Day weekend. The $2 third prize was won by Mrs. Frank Misco, 204 Bortondale Road, Middletown, for her tip on the second fire in a month at the home of a Middletown family.

25 Years Ago – 1992:

Primos Elementary School on Bunting Lane, Upper Darby, reopened its doors to students after an 11-year closure following a ninemonth renovation project costing $3 million. “The kids had a double dose of anxiousnes­s,” Principal Stu Yowell said of the students’ excitement about the first day of school and about entering a “new” school. 10 Years Ago – 2007:

Haverford Commission­er Mario Oliva will chair a new historical committee. Also serving is Jim McGarrity as vice chair. Oliva got the idea from his involvemen­t with Llanerch Crossing Park. Begun in 2005, the project is transformi­ng an unsightly corner lot at West Chester Pike and Darby Road into an attractive gateway, with murals and plaque commemorat­ing a right-of-way dispute between the Pennsylvan­ia Railroad and West Chester Traction Co. that took place on the spot in 1895.
