100 Years Ago – 1917: Ofa party of four men speeding along Chester Pike shortly after midnight, one is dead, another is in a hospital, a third is In jail, and the fourth is at liberty, unscathed, and intent upon eluding the authoritie­s. Their automobile crashed into a large delivery truck owned by Story’s Express of Chester, used by the Aberfoyle Manufactur­ing Co. 75 Years Ago – 1942: A parachute drifting over Yeadon caused a scare before it finally descended on a roof top and proved to be a weather parachute. Scores of telephone calls flooded the police station and Chief C. Stewart

Robinson followed it until it dropped on the roof of the home of William Bailey, 943 Duncan Ave. Robinson examined the parachute and found it carried a small metallic box containing weather-recording instrument­s.

50 Years Ago – 1967: Two Delaware County men were arrested Saturday in Marcus Hook as they allegedly fled with some $12,000 worth of diamonds from a Wilmington jewelry store. Charged with grand larceny in the theft were a 27-year Ridley Township man and a 24-year-old Chester man. Shortly before 4 p.m. Saturday, they allegedly grabbed a box of uncut diamonds from the Doubet store in the Wilmington Merchandis­e Mart and fled.

25 Years Ago – 1992: Caesar the Wrestling Bear attracted two groups of people to Brownie’s Pub last night – the brave souls with beer muscles who actually sparred with this 800-pound North American black bear and the animal protection activists who protested the event. The owners of Brownie’s paid $1,500 to have Caesar dance with and heave their customers across a padded stage last night.

10 Years Ago – 2007: A chase through three counties ended early Tuesday morning just outside of Kennett Square when a state police trooper rammed the vehicle with his cruiser. Philadelph­ia police said they stopped a vehicle that was being driven erraticall­y on City Avenue. When interviewe­d, the 44-year-old Philadelph­ia man appeared incoherent, police said, adding that an officer noticed suspected drugs on the front seat. Police said before they could make an arrest, the driver took off southbound. The chase was picked up by local and state police in Delaware County and continued into Chester County before being stopped near the Wawa in Longwood.
