100 Years Ago – 1917:

The Chester School Board’s Committee on Night Schools will soon announce the date for the beginning of the classes. George Pedlow, of the high school, will be in the charge of the work. The number of inquiries received indicates a large attendance.

75 Years Ago – 1942:

To be entertaini­ng a guest in one’s apartment and have a 50-caliber machine gun bullet crash its way through a rear door, pierce a staircase, go through a wall and end its journey in the far end of the cellar was the experience of Mrs. Ruth Dunderdale, of Third and Caree avenues, Essington, late Saturday. She was entertaini­ng Mrs. Thomas Lee, of Odgen, when the strange incident took place. Tinicum Chief of Police Norman Walls was notified of the incident and learned that they bullet had been fired from an Army pursuit plane. It is said that 30 of the messengers of death were released when someone on the plane accidental­ly brushed against the release button. Where the other 29 bullets came to a stop is not known, as so far there have been no other reports of buildings struck. 50 Years Ago – 1967: Attention Brides-to-be: Wedding forms must be filled out and returned to the Daily Times office or to the Times correspond­ent in your area at least a week before the wedding. 25 Years Ago – 1992:

The state should immediatel­y assume control of the troubled Chester Upland School District, Thaddeus Kirkland, the Democratic candidate for the 159th District state House seat, said. Kirkland’s call for the state takeover come on the heels of announceme­nt that Superinten­dent Anthony Iacono would receive a lucrative buy-out package totaling $210,000, in addition to lifetime medical benefits.

10 Years Ago – 2007:

A Cigarette Litter Prevention Grant Program Team has been establishe­d in Media and will represent businesses, government, residents, media and other organizati­ons. A $2,500 grant was part of the statewide Keep America Beautiful Program. The borough and Media Business Authority will install 25 ash receptacle­s throughout the borough and will distribute pocket ashtrays to adult smokers.
