Fugitives invited to come forward and clear up ‘wanted’ status
MEDIA » Fugitives looking to come clean with the law have two upcoming chances, thanks to a new program hosted by the Delaware County Sheriff’s office that is debuting on Saturday.
Partnering with Probation and Parole, Domestic Relations Services, the District Attorney’s office and Delaware County courts, “Operation Reset” will give eligible individuals with outstanding Delaware County warrants the chance to turn themselves in and, in most cases, receive a new court date or probation hearing, set bail, or pay a fine.
The program is being held from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. on Sept. 23, and from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. on Oct. 14, at the Delaware County Courthouse, 201 W. Front St. According to a flier released by Delaware County Sheriff Mary McFall Hopper, the goal of the program is to give individuals the chance to reset their status from “fugitive to clear” during Saturday hours.
According to the Sheriff’s office, the program eliminates potential problems or dangers deputies face when they show up on an individual’s doorstep. It also eliminates potential embarrassment for fugitives of being handcuffed in front of family, friends and neighbors.
While not all are eligible for the program, those with outstanding warrants involving domestic relations, probation, failure to appear, traffic and non-traffic issues are encouraged to consider it.
