100 Years Ago – 1917:
Acting in compliance with orders issued by Chester Chief of Police Vance, Street Sergeant Owens and Patrolmen Clarkson and Miley swooped down on the house at Watts alley at 3 o’clock yesterday morning and arrested 10 of the inmates. The raid was occasioned by many complaints registered with the police chief about the alleged disorderly house. When raided by the police, several women as well as men were holding forth to a jolly celebration with intoxicants. The noise being made by the persons could lie heard for two squares in the distance.
75 Years Ago – 1942:
Pupils from Chester’s DeweyMann School will receive the guidance of school safety patrol officers at street intersections as organization of the patrol has been completed, Mrs. Erma McCleery, a member of the school faculty in charge of the patrol, announced today. Captains and lieutenants of the patrol have been elected. They are: Girls captain, Minerva Hionis; boys captain, Albert Chazin; lieutenants, Elaine Pancoast, Rose Kaciuban, James Bushenham and Charles Drulik.
50 Years Ago – 1967:
Delaware County’s two new institutions of higher education were opened for classes today at temporary sites in Chester and Ridley Township. About 235 youths – some 65 fewer than expected – were registered for classes at Pennsylvania State University’s Delaware County campus at Sixth and Penn streets, Chester. Some 230 students were scheduled to attend classes at the 4:30 p.m. opening the Delaware County Community College’s temporary facilities in Ridley High School, Ridley Township.
25 Years Ago – 1992:
Quirky Texas billionaire Ross Perot will announce Saturday that he’s resuming his independent bid for the presidency, Delaware County GOP leaders said last night. County Republican Chairman Thomas Judge Sr. and Upper Darby leader John McNichol wouldn’t say how they learned the stunning news, but insisted their information was on the mark. “We’ve got our sources,” Judge said.
10 Years Ago – 2007:
Haverford commissioners awarded a $24,600 contract, the lowest of four proposals, for demolition of the former Finelli house and garage at 1110-1116 Karakung Drive. The township acquired the 1.5-acre property in May 2007 through eminent domain proceedings.
