Interboro’s Horn joins WCU Athletics Hall

Former Interboro High swimmer Tina Horn recently was inducted into West Chester University’s Athletics Hall of Fame.

Horn, who has been a health and physical education instructor at Interboro for 17 years, earned All-American honors at West Chester seven times.

She was a four-year NCAA Division II swim meet qualifier while at West Chester, placing seventh, second, sixth and fourth in the 1,650-yard freestyle. She was third and fifth in the 500 freestyle at nationals in 1992 and 1994, and she placed fifth in the 200 butterfly at the 1994 NCAA championsh­ips.

After graduating from West Chester, she earned a master’s degree in Education at Neumann University. She has coached at Widener University and Suburban Swim Club.

*** The Ridley Township Old Timers Associatio­n will hold its 50th Hall of Fame awards dinner Tuesday, Oct. 10, at the Heritage Ballroom at Barnaby’s of America, 2107 MacDade Blvd., in the Holmes section of Ridley Township.

Social hour begins p.m., and dinner will served at 7 p.m.

Joining the Hall of Fame will be football players John Gordon, Brian Kingsborou­gh, Walter “Rusty” Richter and Don Solowski; lacrosse players Bob Calamita, Erica Bryan Capozzoli, Jason at 6 be Kilpatrick and David F. Mullen Jr.; basketball player David Showalter; track and field athlete Dana Early Chao; baseball player David F. Mullin III; all-around athlete Kevin O’Doherty; and softball player Kenneth Firth.

The Old Timers also will honor student-athletes Brock Anderson (Henry J. Martin Memorial Award) and Emily Johnston (Ronald C. DeFelice Memorial Award) from Ridley High’s Class of 2017; retired coach John Wolk (Frank Weichowski/Ted Dugan Memorial President’s Award); Sportsman of the Year Bill Driadon (Edward F. and William J. Burke Memorial Award); and Dr. Kirk Dabney, who will be the recipient of the Danny Murtaugh Memorial Award for service to the community.

*** The Women’s Profession­al Lacrosse League, which will begin play next summer, will honor a number of Delaware County athletes at its WPLL Legends Celebratio­n and Legends Game at the United States Lacrosse headquarte­rs in Sparks, Md., Saturday, Sept. 30.

The Legends Game will begin at 12:30 p.m., followed by an exhibition contest featuring many of the 100 players selected in the league’s first draft, which was held in August.

Among the Legends coaches will be Carole Cantele of Gettysburg College, who played at Nether Providence High; Josie Harper of Darmouth, former coach and athletics director at Penncrest High; Chris Sailer, the Haverford High and Harvard AllAmerica who has coached Princeton University to the NCAA Division I title; former Chester resident Tina Sloan Green of Temple University; Sue Stahl, the Upper Darby High graduate who coached at Old Dominion and was head coach of the United States World Cup team; and Cindy Timchal, former Haverford High athlete who coached Division I championsh­ip teams at the University of Maryland.

Players being honored include Penn Wood graduates Kara Ariza (Virginia), Kathleen Geiger (Temple), and Jill Pearsall (Penn State); Karen Borbee (Delaware), Kristie Jenkins Kemezis (Maryland), Barb Jordan (Penn State), and Candy FinnRocha (Penn State) of Penncrest; Marple Newtown’s Rachel Becker DeCecco (Princeton) and Tami Worley (Penn State); Michi Ellers of Strath Haven and Georgetown; Harriton’s Cheri Greer (Virginia); Laura Harmon (Maryland) and Kerstin Kimel (Maryland) of Haverford High; and Conestoga’s Kim Jackson (Delaware).

*** Dr. Eddie Coyle, the Monsignor Bonner graduate who overcame polio to earn gold medals in weightlift­ing at the Paralympic Games, presents an award to a physically challenged athlete at the Pennsylvan­ia Sports Hall of Fame’s Delaware County Chapter awards dinner each June.

Coyle is seeking candidates for the 2018 Dr. Eddie Coyle Award. Anyone who knows of an individual who might qualify for the award can contact Coyle at ecoylecham­p@ comcast.net.

*** The Sports Legends of Delaware County Museum, which is located at 301 Iven Avenue in Radnor, is featuring one of the cards from its newest collection of top county sports figures each week on the museum’s website at www.sportslege­ndsofdelaw­arecounty.com.

The featured card this week is that of Lisa Raymond, a native of Wayne and graduate of The Academy of Notre Dame, who was NCAA singles champion in 1992 and 1993 as a member of the University of Florida’s women’s tennis team.

She helped the Gators to their first NCAA title in 1992, when she was named Tennis Magazine’s Collegiate Player of the Year. As a profession­al, Raymond earned six Grand Slam titles in women’s doubles and five championsh­ips in mixed doubles.

At the 2012 Olympic Games, she won a bronze medal in mixed doubles, teaming with Mike Bryan to represent the United States.

*** The Sports Legends Museum is continuing its drive to raise funds to have a statue erected of Radnor High graduate Emlen Tunnell, a World War II hero and the first African-American elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

Museum curator Jim Vankoski recently was pleased with the announceme­nt that former Chester High athlete Bo Ryan, retired University of Wisconsin men’s basketball coach, made an offer to help the statue committee reach its fundraisin­g goal of $75,000 by coming up with the $20,000 it still needs for its final payment.

“If there is an individual, club, organizati­on, business, or company willing to donate $10,000, I will match it with a donation of the final $10,000,” Ryan said. “Let’s get this done.”
