Iona Marie West Vickers
Iona Marie West Vickers, 96, went to be be with her Savior on Sept. 25, 2017.
Born in Phila. in 1921, the daughter of Ethel (nee Lofland) and Charles Oscar West and she grew up in W. Phila. Her father died when she was 5 years old and because he worked for the railroad, Iona and her mother had a pass that enabled them to frequently visit family in Sussex County, DE.
After graduating from W Phila H.S., she worked for the Drexel Bookstore, an insurance company and eventually Bell Tel. She later worked as a church secretary for Wharton Memorial Methodist Church and First United Methodist Church of Media.
She was the beloved wife of the late Harry G. Vickers. She is survived by her sons, Charles G. (Fran) and James H. (Sally); grandchildren Chuck (Mary), Chad (Emily), Tim (Lori), Dan (Jen), and Andrew Vickers and Stacy Foreacre (Jon); greatgrandchildren CJ, Callie, Jake, Cooper, Leo, Caden, Conor, Katie and Zac Vickers, AJ, Tristan and Jason Foreacre, and many nieces and nephews.
She was a longtime resident of Norwood, PA before moving to her son’s home in Media, PA in 2006.
Iona had deep faith and was an active member of Norwood United Methodist Church where she served on several committees and women’s groups, taught Sunday School, was a pianist and sang in the choir. She had a beautiful voice and often sang solos. In her later years, she had her own ministry of sending cards and letters of encouragement that blessed many.
Known for her gracious hospitality, she was an excellent housekeeper, cook and seamtress. She had a remarkable memory and maintained a sharp mind and sense of humor through her last days. Iona will always be remembered as a loving and caring person.
Relatives and friends are invited to her Funeral Service 11am Saturday at Norwood United Methodist Church, 315 Chester Pike, Norwood, PA 19074. Viewing in the church after 9:30am. Burial Monday 11:30am at Bridgeville Cemetery, 304 S. Main St., Bridgeville, DE.
