William Thomas Hamilton “Tom” MacNew passed away on September 10, 2017 at the age of 92 at Veterans Victory House in Walterboro, SC. Tom was born in Philadelph­ia, PA on October 9, 1924 to parents Harold and Emma MacNew.

Tom was preceded in death by his wife of 66 years, Anna May. He is survived by his sons, William, Jr. and Gary, grandchild­ren, Heather and Brian, and great grandchild­ren, Liam and Tate. Tom was an avid sports fan. He and his father were semi-pro baseball players. He played football at Frankford High School and Louisiana State University.

He enlisted in the Army in October 1942 and served in Europe during WWII in the 99th Infantry Division. He fought at the Battle of the Bulge and the Bridge at Ramagen, where he was severely wounded by an enemy artillery shell and earned his Purple Heart.

He graduated from Temple University with a Bachelors in Commerce and began a distinguis­hed career in Communicat­ions and Public Relations.

He was a writer for Automotive Age and founding editor of Aerospace Management for the Chilton Company, Director of Education Operations for the Philco division of Ford Motor Company and Director of Communicat­ions for Boeing Vertol and Boeing Computer Services.

He also served as President of the Delaware County Chamber of Commerce and as Chairman of the Delaware County Industrial Developmen­t Authority.

Tom and Ann retired to Morehead City, NC and later to Beaufort, SC.

A memorial service will be held at St. John’s Lutheran Church, Beaufort, SC on Friday, October 20, 2017 at 11 A.M. Interment will be in Arlington National Cemetery.
