Churchmen top Westtown, push win streak to 13

For Episcopal Academy boys soccer, it’s lucky No. 13.

Spencer Higgins tallied a goal and an assist in the first half as Episcopal ran out to a 3-0 win over Westtown for its 13th straight win to open the season.

Harrison Malone and Chase Julicher also scored for EA. Colin Loughhead and Johnny Cunningham notched assists.

In other nonleague play: MARPLE NEWTOWN 3, POPE JOHN PAUL II 2 » Tommy Wenger scored off an assist from Chad Lairdieson 10 minutes into the second half, a second goal in 10 minutes to help the Tigers erase a halftime deficit and claim the win.

Lairdieson assisted on a goal by Luke Ciavardell­i and scored courtesy of a Marco Mesoraca setup. Dan Quimby made four saves in goal for the Tigers. METHACTON 3, PENNCREST 1 » Matt Arbogast staked the Lions to a halftime lead, but Penncrest couldn’t hang on. Max Brown set up the goal, and Kieran Wilmot stopped 12 shots for Penncrest (4-8).

In the Del Val League: ACADEMY PARK 2, PENN WOOD 2 » Bastien Pigeot and Kho Tuang scored in the first half, and the Knights (8-4-1, 4-0-1) held on late Friday night in a game called due to four Penn Wood red cards. AP maintains the high ground in the race for a Del Val title.

Romario Sterling and Andrew Nmah scored for Penn Wood.

Field Hockey

Marie Smith scored in overtime to pilot Upper Darby past Delco Christian, 2-1, Friday in a nonleague collision.

Smith and Skylar McCullough assisted on Brea Roberts’ opening goal in the first half. Brooke van Eerden hit back for the Knights in the second half, but Smith settled it in overtime.

Mariama Keita stopped two shots for UD. Opposite number Rachel Yeung made eight saves.

In other PENNCREST 3, COATESVILL­E 1» Maitlin Combs, Kerry Peyton and Hannah Christense­n each scored as the Lions scored a win. Emerson Smith chipped in an assist, Abby Race stood out in defense and Audrey Bassett made six saves in goal. ARCHBISHOP CARROLL 3, HILL SCHOOL 0 » Mary Kate Kearney turned aside seven shots to earn the shutout for the Patriots.

Emma Kichula fired home a free kick in the 78th minute to hand Notre Dame a 2-1 win over Ridley Friday.

Juliet Marchesani also scored for the Irish, and Caroline Kramer made five saves in goal.

Sarah Hurley set up Kayley Smith’s goal in the first half for Ridley, which benefitted from nine saves from Sydney Zimmerman.

In other nonleague EPISCOPAL ACADEMY 1, CONESTOGA 0 » Olivia Dirks took a pass from Anna Salvucci, beat a defender and roofed the only goal of the game in the second half to lead the Churchwome­n (8-1). Hannah Moriarty posted the clean sheet with eight saves. Maeve Regan stopped seven shots for Conestoga. MERION MERCY 3, UPPER DARBY 1 » Alexis McElhone turned home a feed from Jaclyn Castell in the second half, and Alyssa Hanrahan stopped four saves, but the action: Royals fell.

Lauren Andruszko, Teresa Hegarty and Liz Norton scored for Merion Mercy.

Volleyball

So strong was Archbishop Carroll’s outside hitting that even a historic night from Cardinal O’Hara’s Breanna Hickey couldn’t deter the Patriots.

Hickey pounded away 21 kills, a Cardinal O’Hara single-game record, to go with 10 digs, but Carroll claimed a 3-1 Catholic League win.

Maeve Boylan added 26 assists, nine digs and three kills, and Siobhan Boylan added eight kills and four blocks for O’Hara (11-2, 5-1), which fell by game scores of 25-13, 25-18, 24-26 and 2517.

In SUN VALLEY 3, RIDLEY 0 » Hannah Vickers did a little of everything with 13 kills, 16 assists and five blocks as the Vanguards battled out a trio of tight games, 25-20, 25-23 and 26-24. Olivia Nickerson posted double-double of 11 kills a other nonleague action: and 11 digs, and Kristine Geunther found enough time around burying nine kills to dish 19 assists for Sun Valley (8-5).

Melanie June did her defensive best for Ridley with 22 digs and five aces. Angela April tallied a double-double of 16 kills and 11 digs, Jackie Kelly dished 23 assists and Maria Brown put down six kills for the Green Raiders. DOWNINGTOW­N WEST 3, PENNCREST 1 » Tina Balta handed out 31 assists and plucked a dozen digs, but the Lions lost by game scores of 25-22, 20-25, 2517 and 25-23.

Julie Kasper (11 kills), Lily Mallon (10) Jordan Schuller (nine) and Carly Venit (seven) paced the attack. Kasper and Schuller combined for 19 digs for the Lions (5-5).

In the Del Val League: ACADEMY PARK 3, CHESTER 0 » Taylor Eiserman blasted 18 aces to go with 10 kills as AP (9-4, 8-0 Del Val) remained unbeaten in the league by game scores of 25-9, 25-11, 25-10.

Ashley Green paired five aces with 15 assists. Vicki Natale added three aces and 12 assists, Jesse Jirak had four aces and four kills and Elianna Gauillan tallied five kills for AP.

Girls Tennis

Caroline Lynch, Jessica Dougherty and Mary Claire Hayden marched to straight-sets victories in singles play as Cardinal O’Hara topped Little Flower, 5-0, Friday to claim advance its record to 13-2 and finish a perfect 8-0 season in the Catholic League heading into last week’s playoffs.

In the Ches-Mont League: GREAT VALLEY 7, SUN VALLEY0» Olivia Warren battled to win two games in the second set of her match at third singles, but like the other six Vanguards, Warren fell in straight sets.

In the Catholic Academies League: MOUNT ST. JOSEPH 5, SACRED HEART 0 » The first doubles pairing of Mya Lockings and Glenna Gobeil claimed three games in the second set, but they fell, 6-0, 6-3, to the Mount.

Water Polo

John Nelligan scored five goals to go with two assists, three steals and three drawn ejections as Haverford downed the Hill School, 12-7.

Matt La Rocca tallied a hat trick. JR Leitz paired two goals with a helper, and Matt Baumholtz and Matej Sekulic combined for five assists. Nick Biddle made seven saves for the Fords (11-4).

Cross Country

Taylor Barkdoll finished 45th in the girls Brown Race at the Paul Short Run at Lehigh University Friday, clocking in at 19 minutes, 30 seconds on the 5,000-meter course.

As a team, Strath Haven finished 21st, well behind champion Centervill­e. Olivia Malley was 110th, and Ava Crawford finished 113th.

Sacred Heart’s Doyle crossed the in 20:08.

The Strath Haven boys finished 18th in the boys team race, won by SpringFord. Cole Worth led the way in 94th place in a time of 16:42. Josh Malley was 103rd, while Jacob Davidson was three spots behind him. Kayleigh line 90th
