Jespersen steps in, and Widener hits another gear

An injury to quarterback Sean McGaughey hasn’t slowed down Widener football. Graham Jespersen made sure of that Saturday.

Jespersen threw for 317 yards and three touchdowns as Widener’s offense awakened to 28-20.

Jespersen, making his second start, connected for touchdowns of 21 yards to D’Andre Sapp, five to James Gillespie and 52 to Montrell Hicks-Taylor in the first three quarters as the Pride (3-2, 3-1 MAC) never trailed. Jespersen was 22-for-29 through the air with an interception.

Chris Randle’s 17-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter sealed the win. Randle carried 10 times for 73 yards and caught two passes for 56 yards. Rob Ennis top Lebanon Valley, added 68 yards on the ground on 12 carries as Widener put up 468 yards of offense.

Gillespie hauled in six passes for 54 yards. HicksTaylor (four catches, 92 yards) and Sapp (five for 65) also had big days.

Vince Char led the defense with 1.5 sacks, 3.5 tackles for loss, 15 total tackles and a forced fumble. EAST STROUDSBURG 33, CHEYNEY 13 » The Wolves’ offense outgained ESU, 390268. But five turnovers and two special-teams touchdowns hurt the Wolves.

Dominick Trautz threw for 212 yards on 28-for-40 passing. He connected with Yvesner Ferdinand on a 23yard score late in the third quarter to make it 19-7 East Stroudsburg. Rolando Ransom ran for a two-yard touchdown in the fourth quarter for Cheyney (1-4, 0-2 PSAC East).

Brandon French gained 97 yards on 12 carries. Ferdinand (seven catches, 41 yards) was among seven Wolves to catch passes.

Elijah Rehm returned a free kick 60 yards for a score in the third quarter following a Warriors safety, and Marquis Fells scored on a 67-yard punt return in the fourth quarter. WILLIAMSON 54, GEORGE MASON 36 » Freshman David Williams just missed the school record with 253 rushing yards and three touchdowns to spark the host Mechanics.

Williams ran for 121 yards and two touchdowns in the fourth quarter, yet finished one yard shy of Curtis Schofield’s mark of 254 set in 2009.

The Mechanics ran for 377 yards, with Dwayne Parent (Chichester) rushing for 37 yards and DeJuan Outlaw and quarterback Vince DelPercio adding 41 each. DelPercio threw for 123 yards and three touchdowns, two of the scores to Outlaw.

Linebacker Gino DiCamillo, a product of Marple Newtown, led the Mechanics with 10 tackles, including three for loss. DiCamillo forced a fumble, recovered a fumble and had three quarterback hurries.
