Trump arrives at Liberty National for Presidents Cup finale
JERSEY CITY, N.J. » President Donald Trump arrived at Liberty National on Sunday just as the Americans were closing in on victory in the Presidents Cup.
Trump was watching from the hospitality suite of PGA Tour Commissioner Jay Monahan. The tour said he would become the first sitting president to present the trophy at this event, which was named after the highest office.
Trump had a clear view of the 14th green, and he appeared behind a glass wall from an upstairs library in the clubhouse with Monahan and former tour commissioner Tim Finchem, who worked in the White House during the Carter administration.
He became the first president to attend the matches since Bill Clinton watched on Saturday in 2000 at the Robert Trent Jones Golf Club in Virginia.
Dunne holds off McIlroy’s challenge to win British Masters
NEWCASTLE-UPON-TYNE, ENGLAND » Paul Dunne held off a thrilling challenge from Rory McIlroy in the final round of the British Masters on Sunday to claim his first European Tour title.
Dunne, who sprang to prominence after sharing the 54-hole lead in the 2015 British Open while still an amateur, shot seven birdies and an eagle in a closing 61 to finish 20 under par.
The 24-year-old Irishman sealed victory in style by chipping in on the 18th to finish three shots clear of McIlroy and secure a place in the world’s top 100 for the first time.
Frank Esposito Jr. wins Senior PGA Professional
SCOTTSDALE, ARIZ. » Frank Esposito Jr. won the Senior PGA Professional Championship for the second time in four years Sunday at Desert Mountain.
Esposito, the 54-year-old PGA Teaching Professional at Forsgate Country Club in Monroe Township, New Jersey, chipped in for eagle on the final hole for a 4-under 68 and a five-stroke victory.
Esposito finished at 12-under 276 and earned $21,500.
Jim Schuman of Scottsdale was second after a 70 on the Cochise Course.
Stuart Smith of Reno, Nevada, had a 68 to finish third at 6 under.
The top 35 players earned spots in the Senior PGA Championship in May at Harbor Harbor, Shores in Michigan. Benton
Henderson wins New Zealand Women’s Open
AUCKLAND, NEW ZEALAND » Brooke Henderson won the weather-delayed New Zealand Women’s Open on Monday, finishing off a 3-under 69 for a five-stroke victory.
The 20-year-old Canadian led by four shots through six holes Sunday when the final round was suspended after a day of heavy rain, high wind and threatened lightning strikes. She returned Monday morning to the Windross Farm course and easily held off China’s Jing Yan for her second LPGA Tour victory of the season and fifth overall.
Henderson finished at 17-under 271. She also won the Meijer LPGA Classic in June in Michigan.
“I was feeling pretty comfortable out there and I was just trying to keep it at minus 17 as long as I could,” Henderson said after receiving the trophy, $195,000 winner’s check and a ceremonial feather cloak presented by indigenous Maori. “I had a couple of bogeys but made a lot of birdies and it was probably some of the best golf I’ve played in a while.”
