Ridley Park Library welcomes Pals for Life to build reading confidence
RIDLEY PARK » The Ridley Park Library, 107 E. Ward St., invites children in grades 1-5 to read books to the Pals for Life pets. Pals for Life is a nonprofit organization that provides opportunities for reluctant readers to practice reading to animals. The program is held on Wednesdays Oct. 11 and Nov. 8 at 7 p.m. in the children’s library.

Busy fall at Aston
ASTON » Aston Public Library, 3720 Concord Road, holds its fall book sale from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Oct. 5-Oct. 7. Most items are $2 or less. All proceeds benefit Friends of Aston Public Library.
The library welcomes Taylor Hospice to present “Navigating Aging” from 11 a.m.-noon Oct. 10. Join Taylor Hospice to gather together and talk about the many different important topics related to the preparation of aging. The presentation covers various issues such as the importantance of wills, designating a Power of Attorney, knowing the many organizations available to reach out to for support, and many more essential learning tools. For everyone who ever wanted to learn to play Chess, visit the library’s new Chess Club at 6 p.m. Tuesdays. The club is open to those 10 and up. Chess teacher Mr. Ed Finn visit the club to teach guests how to play or to help brush up on skills. Game pieces are supplied.

Seed swap at Swarthmore
SWARTHMORE » The Swarthmore Public Library, 121 Park Ave., invites gardeners to a Seed Swap program, exchanging seeds from their garden with seeds donated by others. Gardeners are requested to collect seeds from their favorite plants and deposit them in seed packets which are available at the library.
All filled packets should be returned to the library by Oct. 13. During the week of Oct. 23-29, all those who have donated seeds will be able to exchange them for seeds from other gardeners. The Seed Swap is part of the Wild Garden Series which will have gardening related programs at the Swarthmore Public Library. Visit Yeadon for sale this weekend
YEADON » Friends of Yeadon Public Library celebrate the library’s 80th birthday and the 50th anniversary of opening its current site at 809 Longacre Blvd. with the following events:
• Black Saturday Shopping Extravaganza and Harvest Tasting Event Nov. 25. Anyone interested in vending should contact the library. Table cost is $15.
• Yeadon Public Library 80/50 Birthday Party Dec. 16.
There is a free raffle for a gift basket in September, October, November and December. Tickets for each raffle are issued to any patron wishing to participate who comes into the library for any reason, with a name being drawn at the end of each month.
Yoga, Philly sports at Ridley Twp. library
RIDLEY TOWNSHIP » Ridley Township Library, 100 E. MacDade Blvd., Folsom, offers chair yoga classes this fall at 1:30 p.m. Saturdays Oct. 14 and 28 or Nov. 11. Unlike traditional yoga, chair yoga allows participants “to get fit where you sit.” Guests may register for one or more classes; registration is required.
Participants learn yoga poses, breathing, stretching and light exercise adapted to a chair. The class ends with a brief relaxation. Classes are taught by Donna Shumaker, a registered yoga teacher who received her teacher training and Integrative Yoga Therapy training from YAMA studio in Baltimore, Md. She taught in Delaware County for 15 years before establishing her studio, Breathe Om Yoga, located in Swarthmore.
Philadelphia Inquirer and Daily News sports columnist Frank Fitzpatrick visits Ridley Township Library on Sunday, Oct. 15 at 1:15 p.m. to present a talk on what was happening on the Philadelphia sports scene in 1957. This year is significant for the library because it was the year when the library was founded. This program is part of the library’s celebration of its 60th anniversary. Frank Fitzpatrick has been an editor and writer at the Inquirer since 1980. A onetime beat writer for the Phillies, Eagles, and Penn State football, he also has covered nine Olympics. A 2000 Pulitzer Prize finalist, he now focuses on sports projects for the Inquirer and Daily News and writes a Sunday column.

Mummies, shipbuilding at Tinicum library
TINICUM » Tinicum Memorial Public Library, 620 Seneca St., Essington, welcomes Bill Moller of the township historical society for “Hog Island, World’s Largest Shipyard” at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 18. Come out to hear the fascinating story of the shipyard along the Delaware River. Registration is requested.
Visit the Tinicum Township Administration Building, 628 N. Governor Printz Blvd., Essington, at 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 7, where the library presents “I Want My Mummy! Secrets from the Sands of Egypt” Stephen “Dr. Steve” Phillips, Ph.D., from the Egyptian Section of the University of Pennsylvania Museum of Archaeology and Anthrology returns to Tinicum to share his explorations of ancient Egyptian mummies and their cointuned influence on modern life. Come out for a behind-the-scenes look at archaeological excavations at the Great Pyramids in Egypt. The program is appropriate for middle school ages and up. Registration is encouraged.

Media-UP ready for fall sale
MEDIA » The Media-Upper Providence Free Library Book Sale is set for 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Oct. 21-23 at the library, 1 E. Front St.
The sale features all kinds of books, movies, music and more, including large amounts of books about horseracing, baseball, golf, exercise, railroads and trains, and Asian and vegetarian cookbooks. There is also a huge selection of LPs.
In preparation for the sale, the library has temporarily stopped accepting donations and ask that additional book donations be held until Nov 1.

Kids, seniors programs at Norwood
NORWOOD » Norwood Public Library, 512 Welcome Ave., welcomes all YuGiOh card players and collectors in grades 3 and up to meet at 3:45 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 5, to share and play with fellow YuGiOh enthusiasts. On Tuesday, Oct. 10, children attending Preschool Connections have an opportunity at the new 1:30 p.m. session to check out a real fire truck and firefighting equipment presented by the Norwood Fire Company. The 10 a.m. program does not have a fire truck, but has lots of fun activities learning about fire prevention. Kids in grades K-5 are welcomed to our Kids Klub program full of fun activities on Oct. 10 at 3:45. On Wednesday, Infant Storytime has a stimulating learning experience for infants and their parents/ caregivers at 10 a.m. Kids in grades 6-8 can come to the library for a movie/manga night. Showtime is at 3:45.
The library hosts an Aging At Home program on Monday, Oct. 16, at 12:30 p.m. in the library. Coordinated by Senior Community Services in partnership with United Way, Aging at Home is a program that brings peace of mind to seniors by providing services such as home repairs, transportation and more. Come and learn about the benefits of this program. Tea sandwiches and shortbreads are served. Space is limited; please register in advance.
