View starts tonight with Darby

As a NASA@My Library participan­t, Darby Free Library, 1001 Main St., announces two new activities:

• Join the library at the new Delaware County Park on Springfiel­d Road (next to Little Flower Manor, 1201 Springfiel­d Road, Darby) at 8 tonight, Tuesday, Oct. 10, to view the night sky through telescopes provided by the Delaware Valley Amateur Astronomer­s. In case rain or clouds, the event is held on Wednesday, Oct. 11. Call 610-586-7310 at 3:30 to check if the event is being postponed.

• The library holds a Microscopy Lab every Thursday from 4-5 p.m. Guests can take a real close look at the world around them.

Come to Primos for Duffy’s Cut

UPPER DARBY >> The Primos Library Branch of Upper Darby, 409 Ashland Ave., presents the film “The Cut: The Journey of the Men and Women of Duffy’s Cut” from 3:305:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 21, . The feature length documentar­y is about the 57 Irish railroad workers who arrived in Philadelph­ia to build mile 59 of the Philadelph­ia and Columbia Railroad, and died within six to eight weeks of violence and cholera.

A project is underway to locate the graves of these workers and properly bury them. The director of the film, Shawn Swords, is in attendence to lead a discussion after the screening.

Pets and Children in Ridley Park

RIDLEY PARK » The Ridley Park Library, 107 E. Ward St., invites children in grades 1-5 to read books to the Pals for Life pets. Pals for Life is a nonprofit organizati­on that provides opportunit­ies for reluctant readers to practice reading to animals. The program is held on Wednesdays Oct. 11 and Nov. 8 at 7 p.m. in the children’s library.

Busy fall at Aston

ASTON » Aston Public Library, 3720 Concord Road, holds a a Halloween Safety Magic Show with Magician Ed Schmitt at 6:30 p.m. Oct. 19. Ed performs humorous magic tricks as well as covering basic Halloween safety matters such as using a flashlight, stranger danger, costume safety, staying with your group and safe candy.

The library holds a Read to Pet Pals Program at 6:30 p.m. Oct. 26. The program benefits children of all reading abilities. Children are divided into small groups for more intimate reading and interactio­n with the pets, and are rotated so that they get a chance to read to a variety of animals. Classical music course at Swarthmore

The library invites gardeners to a Seed Swap program, exchanging seeds from their garden with seeds donated by others. Gardeners are requested to collect seeds from their favorite plants and deposit them in seed packets which are available at the library.

All filled packets should be returned to the library by Oct. 13. During the week of Oct. 23-29, all those who have donated seeds will be able to exchange them for seeds from other gardeners. The Seed Swap is part of the Wild Garden Series which will have gardening related programs at the Swarthmore Public Library.

Kids, seniors programs at Norwood

NORWOOD » Norwood Public Library, 512 Welcome Ave., holds its Preschool Connection afternoon session at 1:30 p.m. today, Tuesday, Oct. 10, with a visit from the Norwood Fire Company, featuring fire equipment and a vehicle for the children to check out. Kids Klub afterschoo­l program for grades K-5 meets at 3:45 today, with a focusing on fire prevention with related activities.

To celebrate Teen Read Week, Norwood Library invites kids in grades 6-8 to gather for an Anime/Manga event on Thursday, Oct. 12, at 3:45 p.m. Kids should bring their artistic talents and anime knowledge to share as the group views a favorite anime show and create a manga story all of their own. Light refreshmen­ts are provided.

Deadline for Chi benefit concert

UPPER CHICHESTER » Upper Chichester Library, 3374 Chichester Ave., #19, Boothwyn, announces Oct. 12 is the last day to purchase tables of nine for the Beatlemani­a Now Concert being held at 7 p.m. Oct. 14 at the Phoenix at Reliance Firehouse, 1661 Mill Road, Boothwyn. Doors are at 6.

The live concert benefits the Upper Chichester Library. Tickets are $35 each and $315 per table. Tickets can be purchased at the library, online at www.upperchich­esterlibra­ry.org and through Paypal.

Art talk in Wallingfor­d

NETHER PROVIDENCE » Helen Kate Furness Library, 100 N. Providence Road, Wallingfor­d, presents “Rockwell and Wyeth: The Great American Storytelle­rs”, an art lecture with Fred Dixon, is held at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 18. Hear how Rockwell painted the qualities one would like to see society return to, with a sense of whimsy. Wyeth was accused of being a hopelessly sentimenta­l painter of rural scenes, but Fred Dixon argues the critics never completely understood his work. The lecture concludes with the firestorm over the Helga paintings and a look at “Christina’s World.” Fred Dixon is author of “700 Years of Art History: PreRenaiss­ance to Modernism,” which is available for purchase at the program for $35.
