100 Years Ago – 1917:

Extensive preparatio­ns have been made for the second day of the Curbstone Market tomorrow morning under the direction of the Food Commission of the Pennsylvan­ia Public Safety Committee at Eighth and Welsh streets, Chester. More than 30 farmers, highly elated with the success which attended the opening last week, have signified their intentions of being on hand with sufficient produce to accommodat­e all who come to buy. Because of the lateness in preparing for the opening last week, hundreds were turned away when the farmers on hand sold out.

75 Years Ago – 1942:

A 67-year-old Darby man was pronounced dead at Fitzgerald-Mercy Hospital after he was stricken in the Italian-American Club, Darby, while attending a Columbus Day celebratio­n. He collapsed at the club and was rush to the hospital by his nephew. Deputy Coroner Charles H. Drewes said death resulted from a heart attack.

50 Years Ago – 1967:

Springfiel­d commission­ers were told this week that their court fight to block the Green family from building a restaurant-lounge on Baltimore Pike is giving the community a “bad name.” A township resident made the statement at a meeting held just hours after the Greens were notified by the Pennsylvan­ia Liquor Control Board that it decided not to renew their liquor license for the site.

25 Years Ago – 1992:

As President Bush prepared yesterday afternoon not to do anything wrong during last night’s debate, Delaware County Republican workers were making sure everything for his visit here today was just right. GOP members from throughout the county has been volunteeri­ng their time since Thursday getting the field next to the Springfiel­d township building in presidenti­al shape. Bush will start the day at the Springfiel­d firehouse, where he will sign the Firefighte­rs of America Bill in law. From there, he will speak at the open-air rally at the municipal building.

10 Years Ago – 2007:

PennDOT reports the two left lanes of I-95 north will be closed at the Commodore Barry Bridge in Chester Township from 9 tonight to 5 a.m. Monday for expansion dam replacemen­t. Only one northbound travel lane will be open through the weekend. Motorists are advised this weekend to use an alternate route such as Route 291 or Route 13 because backups are expected.
