Borough council appoints new mayor
ALDAN » Council unanimously appointed Carmen Maniaci as the borough’s new mayor.
Maniaci fills the unexpired term of Mayor Joseph Blackburn, who was appointed in April to fill the unexpired term of longtime Mayor James Hopely, who retired for medical reasons.
Blackburn resigned as mayor due to job obligations.
Maniaci, a Republican, has been a resident of Aldan for 20 years. He is married with two children and is employed by Delaware County as manager of the shipping and receiving department.
Born and raised in Philadelphia, he is a graduate of Mercy Vocational High School and attended Delaware County Community College.
Maniaci, who served for two years as an Aldan councilman, is involved in the boy’s club as a coach as well as the Aldan Swim Club, Aldan Boosters Club, and at St. Eugene’s Church.
He is captain of the Avalon String Band, where he has been a member for 21 years. Maniaci also is employed at the Philadelphia Phillies as vendor manager, where he has spent 34 years.
“I am very proud and humbled to be appointed mayor,” Maniaci said. “It is an honor to be in this position and I appreciate the trust council has placed in me. I will do my very best to continue to make Aldan a great place to live.”
Maniaci will face Democrat Nicole Wolverton in the upcoming Nov. 7 election.
Wolverton was born and raised in Berwick, Columbia County, and is a graduate of Berwick High School and Temple University. She and her husband Craig have resided in the borough for 14 years.
Wolverton has been employed in nonprofit fundraising for 20 years, including The United Way and Project HOME.

She enjoys traveling and helps to coach a dragon boat team consisting of cancer survivors and their care givers.
In a related motion, council appointed Steve Maiden to fill the unexpired term of Maniaci on council.
Maiden, who is married and the father of two sons and a daughter, is vice president of the Aldan Youth Club, a member of the Aldan Board of Recreation and the Civil
Council also appointed Lauren Cavanagh as administrative assistant. A lifelong Aldan resident, she is married to a borough police officer and has years of experience in municipal government.
Cavanagh is replacing longtime borough employee Jennifer Perks, who recently tendered her resignation. Service Commission.
