100 Years Ago – 1917:

Two houses located on the Hook Road and Cleveland Avenue, Ridley Township, were destroyed by fire yesterday afternoon, resulting in a loss of about $3,000. Firemen from several of the surroundin­g places responded to an alarm, but owing to a lack of water supply were unable to save the dwellings. The fire broke out in the home of William Riley and was due to a defective flue.

75 Years Ago – 1942:

Chester’s scrap-seeking students will have turned up about 25 or 30 tons of salvage metal by the time the School Day campaign is closed today. As a result of their energy, the students came forth with 11 discarded automobile­s, a ton and a half boiler and all the piping of an abandoned greenhouse at 2109 W. Ninth St.; another boiler and a 40-foot steel smoke stack, both of which approximat­e 1,500 tons, from the rear of the Chester Furniture Company, 219 Thurlow St.

50 Years Ago – 1967:

Constructi­on on the second – Radnor to Haverford – section of the Mid-County Expressway (Blue Route) will begin in about two weeks, officials of the state Department of Highways said. The 1.6 mile section, beginning near Clyde and Ithan roads in Radnor and running south into Haverford, will cost $2.8 million. The work will be finished in about seven weeks.

25 Years Ago – 1992:

A crowd of more than 200 people groaned, jeered and grumbled at a Springfiel­d zoning board hearing on the Argyles Recreation Center to express their displease with the proposed multi-use facility. John B. Pelosi, who currently holds a contingenc­y lease on the former Acme Market building on Chester Road, wants to operate a combinatio­n banquet room, children’s fitness center, indoor miniature golf course, billiard room and snack bar. Although the burned-out Acme building is located in Springfiel­d’s 3rd Ward, the property is surrounded by Ridley Township and abuts Swarthmore. Springfiel­d’s solicitor said the area is commonly referred to as “the pocket,” because of its isolated location.

10 Years Ago – 2007:

A couple engaging in sex on the steps of a Long Lane real estate office were arrested for open lewdness and disorderly conduct. A 30-year-old township woman and a Broomall man were taken into custody by Upper Darby Officer Thomas Hald, who responded to the call and ordered them to put their clothes on.
