Chadds Ford Tavern Talks goes into ‘feast mode’ Nov. 9

CHADDS FORD » Chadds Ford Historical Society concludes its Tavern Talks series for 2017 with “Feast Mode!” from 7-9 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 9, at the BarnsBrint­on House, 630 Baltimore Pike. November’s food-centric topic features 18th century delicacies with several interactiv­e cooking stations. Learn about tavern fare with historic foodways historian Susan Plaisted and cheer on TV host, podcaster and competitiv­e food eater Monty “Moe Train” Wiradilaga as he does the “Colonial Food Tasting Challenge.” Other guest participan­ts include New Castle Historical Society and Chaddsford Winery.

Tavern Talks is a monthly experience (not a lecture) aimed exclusivel­y for adults 21 and older that focuses on unexplored aspects of early American history and culture. Guests experience history with hands-on activities, food and drink tastings, demonstrat­ions, and more.

November food drive in Clifton

CLIFTON HEIGHTS » Clifton Heights Boys Scout Troop 111 and Girl Scout Troops 506, 517, 5613, 5042, 5101, 5110, 5680 and 5826 are “Scouting for Food” during their annual food collection drives Nov. 11 and 18.

Troop members are dropping off plastic bags to homes in the areas of Clifton Heights and Secane and Drexel Hill sections of Upper Darby on Nov. 11 and return the following Saturday Nov. 18 to pick up nonperisha­ble donations of food and household necessitie­s at residents’ doors.

Scouts are seeking donations of peanut butter, jelly, tuna, coffee, tea, sugar, cereal, infant formula, baby food, rice, mac and cheese, pasta products, soap, toilet paper and other items not covered by food stamps.

According to coordinato­r Harris Resnick, all items will be distribute­d locally and shared among local churches including Trinity United Presbyteri­an, St. Stephen, St. Charles, St. Eugene and other participat­ing churches.

Persons whose donations are not picked up by 1 p.m. should call 610-547-9340.

Donations are collected at the Today’s Child Community Center, the former Sacred Heart Social Hall, 357 E. Berkley Ave., Clifton Heights where volunteers are be welcomed.

Learn about Arab culture Monday

ASTON » Neumann University hosts a program on Arabic and Muslim culture at 12:40 p.m. Monday, Oct. 30, in the Multipurpo­se Hall of the Bruder Life Center. Mutaz Al Mudaris, a nationally certified Arabic language interprete­r, explains what Westerners need to know to engage those of the Muslim faith with competence and sensitivit­y. The program is free and open to the public.

Since 2012, Mutaz has been working at Children’s Hospital of Philadelph­ia (CHOP) in language, cultural and educationa­l support. He is also a member of the Cultural Awareness Council at CHOP.

A native of Iraq, Mutaz moved to the U.S with his family in 2009. In 2013 he teamed up with his mother, a scientist and professor, to write a book about Iraq, moving to the United States, and the positive impact the city of Philadelph­ia has had on their family.

The program was arranged by Dr. Leanne Owen, a professor of Criminal Justice. Dr. Owen teaches a variety of courses, including Criminolog­y, Research Methods, Restorativ­e Justice, and Multicultu­ral Issues in Criminal Justice.

EDGMONT » Beauty Art Gallery, 3857 Providence Road, #200, Newtown Square, hosts “Edgmont Environs & Details,” celebratin­g Edgmont Township in an exhibit featuring 54 photograph­s by 27 local photograph­ers. The exhibit is on view through Nov. 15.

“Edgmont Environs & Details” portrays a mix of what makes the township memorable — from scenes in Ridley Creek State Park and the Colonial Plantation, to local animals, trees, fields, and even a few shops and eateries. Photograph­s are available for purchase.

The exhibit showcases the results of a competitio­n that invited amateur and profession­al photograph­ers to submit their best images captured within the 10 square miles of the township. Jurors for the competitio­n were Main Line Art Center Director Amie Potsic; Edgmont Township supervisor Hank Winchester, III; realtor and Edgmont business associatio­n board member David Joslin; and Beauty Art Gallery owner Paula Jackson.

Prizes were awarded by the jury panel and a popular vote for “People’s Choice.” Awards include:

• Edgmont Calendar Award: Eileen Kamison for “Morning Stroll” taken at Colonial Pennsylvan­ia Plantation

• Edgmont Business Associatio­n Award: Laura Ducceschi for “Colonial Barn,” Colonial Pennsylvan­ia Plantation

• Best Animal and People’s Choice awards: Mindy Tatz Chernoff for “Curious x Two” taken at Chunk of Heaven Horse Farm

• Best Landscape: Thomas Caldwell for “Grazing in the Gloaming” taken at Ridley Creek State Park

• Best Detail: Lisa Briand for ”Tiny Visitor,” taken at Wedgewood Gardens

• Best Floral: Pamela Cloud for “Peony Fashionist­as” captured at Eleanor Tickner’s peony farm

• “I Want to See This in Person” Award: Barbara M. Weyler for “Carrying the Sky on His Back,” taken at Hidden Valley Farm

• “Biggest Wow:” Jack Zigon for “Ridley Creek Foggy Sunrise” taken at Ridley Creek State Park
