100 Years Ago – 1917:

Authorizat­ion of the purchase of 10 horses for the new mounted police was made this morning at the regular session of Chester City Council on the recommenda­tion of Director of Public Safety B.D. Wright. The horses will be furnished by Paul Connoly of Philadelph­ia for $1,600.

75 Years Ago – 1942:

Christmas may seem to be a long way off to the youngsters, but for the boys overseas it’s just two days away. In order to insure delivery to soldiers and sailors on duty outside continenta­l United States, packages must be in the mail before this Saturday night, Oct. 31, according to Post Office officials. All packages must be securely wrapped, and should be kept as small as possible. Let’s not forget the boys this Christmas. If you haven’t a soldier or sailor in your own family, send a package to the boy next door.

50 Years Ago – 1967:

A mannerly, well-dressed man held up an Upper Darby savings and loan office Friday and escaped with $3,000 in a cab after the woman he planned to use as a hostage broke free. Later Friday in nearby Darby, a shotgun-toting man wearing a black cloth bag over his head walked briskly through the side door of an Acme Market, took $200 from a cashier, and fled. Police fired shots at the fleeing suspect, but he was not caught. The Upper Darby holdup occurred at the Bell Saving and Loan Associatio­n, 6930 Market St.

25 Years Ago – 1992:

In something of a minor political miracle, Democrats are raising and spending more money than their Republican opponents in two Delaware County races for state House seats. The two districts are both seats where there in no incumbent seeking reelection. One is the 159th, where Democrat Thaddeus Kirkland of Chester has raised $18,809 and spent $15,746, compared to Republican opponent, former sheriff and county Councilman John Taylor who has raised $13,753 and spent only $1,428. In the 166th, Democrat Greg Vitali has outperform­ed Republican Joan Genthert.

10 Years Ago – 2007:

Aston commission­ers recently presented a proclamati­on to members of the Mt. Hope United Methodist Church in recognitio­n of its 200th anniversar­y. The land on which the church is built was donated by Aaron Mattson in 1807 and originally a 30-foot-by-40-foot stone church was erected on a 1-acre site at a cost of $40.
