Man fatally stabbed in Upper Darby home

UPPER DARBY » Police are investigating the stabbing death of a 25-year-old man in his North State Road residence on Friday.

“It appears to be a domestic violence situation that led to his death,” Superintendent Michael Chitwood said Monday, referring to the victim, whom he as 25-year-old Ryan Greene.

According to Chitwood, Greene’s 21-year-old girlfriend told police when they arrived at the apartment the couple shared on North State Street about 3:30 p.m. Friday that she had acted in self-defense when she stabbed him in the chest with a kitchen knife.

Greene allegedly assaulted his identified Lamar girlfriend, “beating her, punching her, kicking her, putting her head in the toilet and flushing it,” Chitwood said, citing information the woman reported to the police.

During the course of the attack, she managed to break free, Chitwood said, adding, “She got a kitchen knife and swung at him, and stabbed him in the chest.”

Afterward, the woman ran outside into the street, screaming for help. A passing and called 911.

“The girlfriend didn’t leave, “Chitwood said. “She had the knife in her pocket.” She was taken to Delaware County Memorial Hospital where she was treated and released.

Chitwood said information provided by the girlfriend is consistent with the scene inside the apartment.

After conferring motorist with stopped the Delaware County District Attorney’s Office, he said it was determined that no charges would be filed at this time.

The victim and the girlfriend have been a couple for about six months. They previously resided in Chester and Yeadon before moving to Upper Darby a couple weeks ago, Chitwood said. According to the woman, she was abused by Greene on three separate occasions but she never reported the incidents to police.
