Norwood parks and rec raises over $5K
NORWOOD » Norwood Borough Parks and Recreation Board held its first ever golf outing on Sept. 29 to raise money for various parks upgrades and projects throughout the borough. Board members Hal Pfaff and Paul Iverson planned the event with oversight from Councilman Ed Fitzpatrick and Mayor James “Chuggo” Costello, gathering sponsorships, organizing the golfers and coordinating with the golf club.
“This type of event is great for the community and is really kicking off the Parks and Recreation Board in a positive way,” said Mayor Costello. “It’s just the start of more good things to come in Norwood Borough.”
Seventy-six golfers came out for the event at Ed Oliver Golf Club in Wilmington, Del. Golfer competed for prizes including a hole-in-one on three different par 3 holes. Prizes Flamingo were a Caribbean trip from Flamingo Travel of Glenolden, a flatscreen TV and a new set of golf clubs.
There were also prizes for closest to the pin, winning foursome, and longest drive (for under 60 and over 60). Gift baskets were also raffled off and 50/50 tickets were sold.
In all, over $5,000 was raised through this event. “I would like to thank the Recreation Board, all the golfers who participated in our first outing, and the prize sponsors as well as the hole sponsors,” said Borough Council President Bill Gavin. “The proceeds from this event will go towards a trail system grant match, which borough council is actively pursuing for the completion of this great project.”
Park and Recreation board members would like to thank the volunteers who arrvied early for set-up and stayed to run the prize tables and man the observation areas for the hole-inone prizes: Paul and Anna Iverson; Donna Costello; Cathie Pfaff; and Anne Cicala.
After the golf rounds, a barbeque lunch was provided, at which the winners were announced, and the raffles and 50/50 tickets were drawn. A beautiful cake was decorated with the famous Norwood Arch, provided by Embee’s Edibles of Springfield. Each participant was presented with a commemorative mug emblazoned with the Norwood Borough logo, along with towels donated by MacDade Bowl and other giveaways. Participants not only walked away with prizes and giveaways, but a sense of community that exudes from Norwood Borough.
“I’m extremely happy with the turnout for the inaugural outing.” said Councilman Ed Fitzpatrick. “Everyone had a fantastic time, and I’d like to thank all the golfers who attended as well as all of our volunteers and sponsors who made this event possible.”
