Media Turkey Challenge food drive set for Nov. 13 and 15

MEDIA» Media’s annual Turkey Challenge is for Monday, Nov. 13, and Wednesday, Nov. 15, at two locations in the borough and Upper Providence Township. Nativity BVM Parish’s CYO is collecting turkeys of all sizes plus nonperisha­ble items on Nov. 13 at the corner of Franklin and Gayley streets in the borough from 6-7:30 p.m. St. Mary Magdalen Parish’s CYO is collecting on Nov. 15 at 2400 N. Providence Road in Upper Providence from 6-7:30 p.m.

Donations are sent to the Media Food Bank and St. Marks’s Food Bank in Broomall. Last year the drive collected over 500 turkeys combined and the CYO members hope to beat that mark in 2017.

Shop fair, help O’Hara band

MARPLE » The Cardinal O’Hara Band and Guard Craft Fair is set for 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 18, and 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 19, in the school cafeteria, 1701 Sproul Road, Springfiel­d.

The fair features 80-plus vendors with hand-made crafts, baby items, breads, candy, sauces, photos, candles, jewelry and much more. COHS Spirit Wear is available for sale. Admission is free.

Mobile vets office visits Delco

MEDIA» State Sen. Tom McGarrigle (26) and Rep. Chris Quinn (R-168) announce that the Pennsylvan­ia Department of Military and Veteran Affairs’ mobile office van is Delaware County from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Friday, Nov. 10, at the corner of Front and Orange streets.

Accredited veterans service officers provide informatio­n and assistance to veterans and family members who may be eligible for benefits through the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. Such benefits might include service-connected disability compensati­on, improved pensions, death pensions, VA health care

benefits, burial benefits, education benefits, vocational rehabilita­tion and much more.

“This is part of an effort to make benefits informatio­n more accessible to state veterans and family members,” McGarrigle said. “I hope area veterans take advantage of this opportunit­y to learn about benefits designed to help those who served our nation.”

“It’s not always possible or convenient to get to a DMVA office to ask questions and go through paperwork. The DMVA mobile office brings veterans service officers to the community,” said Quinn.

Steve Barrar (R-Chester/Delaware) invites veterans of the 160th District to attend the veterans appreciati­on breakfast he is co-hosting with Sen. Tom Killion (R-9) on Sat- urday from 8:30-11:30 a.m. at the Elam United Methodist Church, 1073 Smithbridg­e Road, Glen Mills. Boy Scouts of America Troop 260 assist with the breakfast.

“I look forward to talking with and personally thanking the men and women who have defended our American ideals at the breakfast I am hosting with Sen. Killion,” Barrar said. “They have made incredible sacrifices on our behalf, and this event is a very small way to honor them.”

The workshop is held in the old school hall on the church grounds. This series explains how the systems in buildings work and what is required to properly construct, repair, maintain and make safe, affordable structures. Guests should bring their questions.

The potluck dinner event includes time for ref lection and music from local Zydeco band Lost Northern Tribe.
