100 Years Ago – 1917: The elections across the country Tuesday are known as “off year” contests, but in many of the states and cities great issues will be decided in which the general public everywhere is interested. This is so in New York, where a most bitter fight has been waged for mayor; prohibition is the issue in Delaware; socialism is the paramount issue in other places; Philadelphia has its local contest attracting attention in all parts of the country as to the results. For these reasons the Times will extend its leased wire service up until midnight so that the readers of the Times may get the results from all part of the country. With the returns of the local contests, the results over the country will be given over to the telephone and will be posted on the window in front of the Times office on Market Street. All readers and friends of the Times are welcome to make the Times office and its splendid wire facilities the medium of information tomorrow night. It will be the pleasure of all of the Times people to serve you.

The people, outside the South and the boss-ridden cities, have expressed in definite terms their distrust of the kind of administration we have been having in Washington. The voters don’t like the way pledges have been broken. They don’t like the way the war has been conducted. In spite of the “smear” efforts to discredit Congress, the voters have turned out to produce a constructive opposition.

The series, “Seven Days to Faster Reading,” is a condensation of a book by William Schaill, president of The Reading Laboratory Inc. The series’ purpose is to open up to Daily Times readers a whole new world of reading pleasure.
